7YW Basing

Postby armchairsaxon » Sun Jul 15, 2012 6:17 pm

Hi,

Just thought I would canvas views on 7YW basing and unit sizes people go for as I am considering doing this period?

I thought about 5 bases of 4 or 6 i.e. with a command base in the centre when deployed in line. For a base of 4, 40mm x 40mm seems a bit too spaced out for makes such as Minden and Crusader :?

Number of figures and how closely they are spaced is irrelevant to BP. So just go with what looks right to you.

I have Spencer Smith figures based at six to a 40mm square base for The War Game. These are done in units of 48 rank and file plus 5 officers. When using them for BP I make one War Game unit into two BP Standard units with 24 figures on four bases. With BP the only thing that matters is that the frontages are consistent.

Thanks Alan. I am aware of the freedom of BP I just wondered what the convention was/how people were basing if just starting with 7YW under BP?

I base my AWI Americans on 24s (4 bases of 6 each 45mm x 40mm). 4 bases is probably best for Napoleonic for forming squares. It's just that with 4 bases the command base is off centre. Not sure if I am bothered about this or not :?

Yes off centre command bases bug me too. All my Napoleonics are like that due to using four bases of eight per unit (15mm) :shrug

For 28mm Napoleonics most people I have seen are using 24 figures on six bases of four. With a smaller number of people doing four bases of six. Then there are some using 32 figure units.

I am not sure there is a 'standard'.

For SYW I haven't seen many people using BP yet so can't say if a favourite approach is emerging. I would just go with what feels right to you.

:)
