And this series on the ECW by the OU is okay, if a little brief: http://www.amazon.co.uk/English-Civil-W ... B004KS4SJC

Those spring to mind, there is also a half decent history channel docu on Cromwell

Documentaries? Pah! :D

Watch "The Valley", "Flashing Blade", and "Alatriste" in that order, and you're pretty much set.

TYW is easy. Spanish are good at the start but get worse. Lots of non-descript German types. Tercios are big, but never work right in wargames rules. French also non-descript but nice cavalry. Swedes turn up and are brilliant, until GA pops his clogs. Lots of marching about and complex politics - typical shoddy, foriegn type of war. A bad time to be a mid-European burgher trying to mind your own business.

The History of Warfare DVDs are good. They have documentaries covering loads of different battles including Edgehill, Naseby and Marston Moor. http://www.pegasus-ent.com/index.php

Alatriste and the Last Valley are great. I have watched some German documentaries, but I only understand some bits. I may have to force one of my German speaking friends to translate. :) On a related note, I am reading Gula brigadens hjältar ("Heroes of the Yellow Brigade"), an old adventure novel about heroic Swedes and dastardly Imperialists. Great stuff! As far as I know, it's only available in Swedish.
