Bruener's Regiment

Postby Guest » Sat Dec 18, 2010 7:13 pm

Does anyone know anything about Bruener's Regiment in the TYW? All I know is the flag was included in the Imperial Infantry boxed set and I would like to use it. What country is it from? Do you know anything about this unit?Thank you in advance.Dennis

Bruener's Regiment

Postby cdr » Sun Dec 19, 2010 7:41 am

There were several Breuner regiments (Alt-Breuner, Neu-Breuner and I think even a third regiment).  They were Imperial loyalists from the start of the war (so not really from a country).  I think there they were already present in 1618 (Battle of the White Mountain)and lasted at least until Nördlingen.  I should have the drawings by Wilke somewhere. hope this helps Carl

I thought I'd threadomance this thread from the last page of the forum... ;)
Does anyone know anything more about this regiment? I'm thinking about using this flag, and wonder if someone will say "oh, they're well known for having pink uniforms" :old the minute after I post my black uniform...
:thankyou

You should name the exact regiment that you look for, as stated there are three Breuner Family units.

The Regiment of Generalfeldzeugmeister and Obrist Hans Philipp v. Breuner, raised 1618 and at Lützen 900 strong.
He was also Generalfeldzeugmeister and CO of Wallenstein's artillery, kia at Lützen.

The so named Alt. Breuner, Hans Gottfried v. Breuner, 1630, 5 companies at Lützen.

That of Obrist Philipp Friedrich von Breuner, being raised in 1632. Numbering just 500 men at Lützen.
The title Jung-Breuner / Neu-Breuner is post Lützen. He had another regiment before, raised in 1625, used to destroy the Austrian Peasant revolt in 1626. Wounded at Lützen. 1633 in sachsen. This Breuner died from feaver at Warnemünde in 1638

So would all three have used the same flag or just one of them? If so, which one? :)

Also, I guess there are no Bruener, and just Breuners? So WG misspelled their flag? :shrug

There was no Bruener regiment, this would sound to Germans like Brünner Regiment, the town unit of Brünn.

The Breuner regiments are also to be found in old sources named Brauner and Brenner. Name writing in that time was very..... . Brenner was very fitting. the men got an awfull reputation.

I don't have the Imperial box so I have no idea about the flag in it.
There is a red flag with gren cross of St. Andrew that is "known" to be used by a Regiment Breuner at Lützen. But which? That is not specified.

It includes the imperial cypher F II for Ferdinand II 1619-37. So it was not to be used in 1618 by the oldest of the three regiment. But flags often changed, so it is no proof that it ws not used by that unit in 1632. :shrug

They surely had different flags and no uniform dress, there is absolutely no clue to any dress colours of the Breuner Regimenter.

To make things worse there was also a cavalry unit by Leonhard v. Breuner, raised in 1621. But that was a small unit that fast became Scherffenberg's Harquebusier and cuirassier unit. 100 and 50 Men.

Thanks for the answers! :thumbsup

It sounds as if I can use them for any unit I like, with that few historical sources.

It looks like an updated version of this:
