Postby shadegate » Sun May 06, 2012 9:12 pm

Our local wargames club facebook page was sharing this and I thought I'd pass it on.

Stunning job and some kind words regarding the Warlord kit.

Nice. I wonder if that's the old salt trick with the chips and weathering.

He mentions how that is done on his blog but I think you have to scroll back a few entries. Haven't had time to do much more than drool over the pictures so far.

Stugtastic!
Take car. Go to Mum's. Kill Phil - "Sorry." - grab Liz, go to the Winchester, have a nice cold pint, and wait for all of this to blow over. How's that for a slice of fried gold?

Stug me that's nice. The effect he's got on the lumber on the rear deck is amazing. I'm going to have to check out his blog and shamelessly steal all his techniques.

You know what's really spectacular about it? He's somehow managed to make it look as though it's wet with melted snow.

I think it's just a case of spraying/brushing your vehicle a rusty metal colour as a base, then dabbing water around the bits you want to be chipped and worn, then sprinkling table salt onto it. The salt will stick in a random sprinkle pattern if you just let a little bit trickle onto the model. Then you overspray again with your main colour scheme/s and when you're done you brush the salt away to leave nice looking chips and rust spots. I guess you then just weather and touch up afterwards.

It's not something I have tried yet, but it seems straightforward and the results are certainly effective. It only works for spraying the vehicle though, obviously, because brushing will just cause the salt to fall off.

This looks amazing. Really makes me want to do some Bulge stuff.

As for the weathering process, not having read his blog, it looks like the hairspray technique more than straight salt. Essentially, you spray your grey basecoat, then spray hairspray over the model. Let it dry, then spray your whitewash coat over it, let it dry, then come back in with some cotton swabs, toothpicks, and larger brushes and warm water to slowly remove the whitewash layer, leaving the grey underneath. Salt can be used in this process as well by sprinkling it over the drying hairspray. Oil and pigments, and you're done.
