yall' are probebly getting tired of this....

Postby airborne321 » Wed Jun 27, 2012 7:45 pm

OK, with all that confusion at the earlier post about US Army uniforms I never got quite a clear answer about this stuff.
I have reserched till I have gone blue in the face about the US Army uniform color. I have ordered a set of US infantry and a set of US Rangers along with the US Army paint set. I use Vallegjo paints and need a good answer; What is the correct color for the US Ranger M1941 field jacket? That is all I desprately need to know. I have I pretty good idea about everything else except this. So could someone be so kind as to let me know more or less the right Vallegjo paint color or mix and whether the Ranger M1941 jacket is Khaki, OD no.3, or OD no.7 it would be very helpful. Thank you very much gentelmen and God bless you. :)

The M1941 was OD3 when it came out of the factory. Like everything else OD3 from leggings to Paratrooper uniforms it faded quickly to variuos shades of light green or tans. In my humble opinion there is no really wrong or right answer to this. I have a buddy who painted his whole GI platoon in Khaki jackets and leggings. I wouldn't have done it- but they look great. I've already gone on record about my paras.

To answer your question, I only use Humbrol. HU-17 with a light brown wash is (I belive) perfect for OD3.

What everyone has alluded to is that there is NO ONE COLOR. I suggest you buy 5 Vallejo paints: Brown Green, Yellow Green, Khaki Grey, Black and Ivory. These will serve you well to create ALL of the subtle variations in OD3 you see on uniforms, web gear, helmets. You will however, need to mix and blend. For this M41 jacket I used Green Brown lightened with Ivory (then add more Ivory to highlight):

If you have the US Army paint set then the 'correct' colour for OD3 in there is 70821 German Camo Beige. The Ranger jacket as worn in Normandy is the M1941 Parsons jacket, and it should be OD3. That said though faded used OD3 can be anything from a pale beige to a bleached out pea green. If you want to get the look of a unit that's been in action a while then varying the colours as grendel's dad suggests is perfect. If you want a set of new issued gear then do them all German Camo Beige. Simples :)
