Are the marines plastic?

Postby BrotherSargeantDaro » Wed May 30, 2012 1:55 am

As the title says, I want to get some marines and some praetorians, but are the marines plastic or metal? I have a bad history with metal models. Thank you for any insight!

Cheers!

They're metal, but I've never had any issues with any WG metals I must add. What problems have you encountered? Or is it just a general dislike of metals (chipping paint, bending, weight or whatever)?

What you said. Paint chipping. that is basically it. I use GW paints, which scratch off awfully easily.

To avoid this there are three things to keep in mind:
  1. Use a good primer so the paints will have a good adherence.
  2. Don't forget to varnish your miniatures properly. I advise to use a layer of gloss varnish first (for the protection) and a layer of matt or satin varnish (for the look) later on.
  3. Handle your miniatures carefully.

I would add to this list to make sure you was your minis (metal and plastic) with a little soapy water (wash up liquid and hot water), the rinse and dry before priming.

If there is a residue from casting on the models, although this may not stop you a painting them it can stop the paint adhering as well as it should making them more susceptible to chipping... for some reason I have found this to particularly be the case with BA figures more than other WG minis, I don't know why.

Games Workshop spray undercoat black tends to come off easily from metals too. Maybe use a matt car spray?

Never had any problems with metal miniatures from either GW, Warlord or The Perry twins. I use GW black undercoat. I usually gives the minis a real cleaning with dish soap and a toothbrush. Cleans them up real good. Im rather sloppy with my minis. Usually drops them and so on but I never got any problems with chipping colours on dented or bent parts.

Grey automotive primer
base coat mix scorched brown chaos black or equivalent 50/50
finish with gloss varnish
over that with dull coat

I have metals going back 25 30 years with minimal damage usually from me dropping them on the garage floor rather than gaming or transport.
I need a cuppa and lie down. Its all to hard.

Okay ... nobody spook him ... let's just talk quietly so as not to scare him off again ...
