A friend of mine forwarded this to me earlier (from a French player’s FB page as I understood).
    Did anyone try something similar?

I actually implemented it and it works perfectly with both the metal Wildcats and the large bombers.
So large bases are no longer needed.
The drawback is that you can’t use the small hole to remove the pilot token from the base but when you went all-in as I did, you have enough bases and pilot token to dedicate some to it.

I haven’t tried this yet, but another solution might be to pack the base with plasticine. The nice feature of that is that it can removed easily if you need to swap out the pilot skill disc.

I have to say though, that tonight I played a game of 6x 109s escorting 3x bombers against 6x Spitfires. I didn’t find the larger bases for the bombers to be that much of a problem, to be honest.

Plasticine, green stuff, milliput or anything similar should work indeed (plus you can easily get the hole back).

I didn’t play the bombers yet but I agree with you, the large bases should not be much of an issue.

My main goal is to deal with the wildcats stability as fighters tend to end close in all the games I played so far.

I bought some 35mm diameter M12 washers. Nice and heavy.
They sit in the bases nicely with a couple of blobs of blu-tak, which also allows them to be removed if you need to poke through the hole to remove the disc.

That’s what I get too but I didn’t thought of anything but to glue them.
Blutak is a great idea indeed.
