    Just need to make sure that I have this right. Can skirmishers in melee in the open go into close order, or do they remain in open order at all times?

    Skirmishers are always in Open Order. When they are in combat, they form up in a loose way. No real formation.

    Do not get confused with light infantry/cavalry, which can adopt Open Order or Close Order. Skirmishers are not the same as light units.
