I know how the rules treat light vs medium machine guns differently, but it often seems that the actual machine gun is often the same weapon.  Is that true at least regards to Bolt Action’s rules, the main difference is light machine guns have crews of 2 models and can be part of squad, while medium machine guns are treated as infantry support units belonging to a heavy weapons platoon.

    pretty much yes.
LMG, 2 man crew, inside a squad
MMG, 3 man crew, fixed weapon, a unit in its own right.

Its not always the same weapon – eg the British LMG is a Bren yet the MMG is a Vickers.  Where they are the same (such as US or German armies) weapon then its the mount and tactical use of them that makes the difference.  The LMG is the maneovarble tactical use, normally with a bipod mount.  Where as the fixed support role usage would be on a heavier tripod mount.
