Well, I’ve been playing BP since day one. All my standard units are 36 figures, which is what they were, generally, before Warlord decided to subtly raise the prices by reducing the number of figures in a box.
That is not helpful, though. What is helpful is to know, or remember that there is no figure count in the game. The only thing that is i…[Read more]

Thank you for the replies. However, would question the number of skirmishers involved. In mixed order, “as close to one third of the unit” is deployed in the skirmish line. If you take the standard unit as being 24 infantry, then a large unit is 36 infantry, and a small unit would be 12 infantry.
One third of the large unit is the same size as a…[Read more]

I agree with Gary, too. When in Mixed Formation, it is the skirmish screen that is firing, not the whole unit. As only a small proportion of the unit is deployed as a skirmish screen, giving it an extra die based on the size of the unit would be unrealistic.
Same thing if the unit is in Attack Column, really.

…base size is not all that important ……. as it will make next to no difference in our game.
p 19 of the BP vII rulebook.
I’ve been using 3 cav troopers on a 60mm x 45mm base for years, merely because that is the default base size you get on the free bases with a Perry cavalry box.
As long as you & your opponents are happy, fine.

I agree with Mr Wills. I think the extra shooting die only applies to units in line. Units in column or mixed formation get no incremental shooting benefit.

The important thing is to keep the unit frontages as close as possible.

I apply it such that mixed formations always have 1 dice, which is the literal interpretation of the rules. Giving them an extra skirmisher die doubles their fire power with only a 50% increase in numbers.

The 2nd edition ruleset couldn’t possibly accommodate the scenario books, but by and large there is good consistency with BP2, but you need to check each specific rule that you select. For example the rules for Generals were modified in BP2 but you still have the option to go with the BP1 option in order to fit with CofE for example. An e…[Read more]

They are one of the slower companies to deal with but I’ve never had any problems with the items themselves. I am disappointed at the new minimum order though as it means I can’t get the limited (why?) edition figure I wanted, essentially I have to spend £75 to be eligible to get it with none of the offset shipping sets being from the ancient…[Read more]

I have just received my copy of V2. There are things in the “A Clash of Eagles” book that are not mention in V2. For instance the Austrian commanders have limites placed on their ability to issue brigade orders, and there are a number of unit special rules (Poor Mixed Formation, Flintenkartasche, Rifled Musket and Carbine etc). As I intend to…[Read more]

Hi,
I have a question relatuinf to shooting.
As I understand it, a large unit shooting adds 1 extra dice compared to a standard sized unit. Does this apply in all circumstances? E.g. a large unit in mixed formation – does it shoot 1 diec or 2?
Thanks
A.

Been thinking some more
Standard Infantry Unit – 6 bases (240mm line frontage) – even number so can do 6×1, 3×2, 2×3 or 1×6
Standard Cavalry Unit – 5 bases (250mm line frontage) – odd number so can do 5×1 or 1×5 – but that seems okay because attack columns don’t apply to cavalry
I could even tweak the cavalry bases to be 48mm wide rather than…[Read more] -

Hi, as someone completely new to Black Powder, I have a question about frontages. I get that the actual frontage and the number of figures on the bases doesn’t matter as long as both sides use the same frontage sizes.
I’m thinking that for a standard infantry unit, the most flexible size will be six bases. That way they can be arranged as

So my independent view.
- Looking at the retail boxes – I find it very hard to believe that they would have been packed like that at the Warlord Games warehouse – it would be a very silly thing to do especially as they have to put their personalised packing slip inside.
- But the external packaging is intact and undamaged.
So if I were to guess…[Read more]

A bit of the mystery solved. I recently bought a rule book on eBay. Seems the seller was actually warlord games (didn’t realise that) and rather cleverly they they worked out that I have a warlord games login and have matched that up with my eBay and PayPal credentials and recorded the sale on their website against my Warlord account. That…[Read more]
