We are preparing for an amphibious landing game but its looks suicidal.
Haha I have no doubt it is. I have always thought itnwas a kiracle for a soldier to survive D-Day, as the odds of being killed were so high.

With 36 men I think you refer to the LCV . A look in the contemporary ONI 226 handbook shows it had no armor at all. The fuel tank was under the pilots position. Those with Diesel engines may be safe, those with gasoline – boom or burning.
Real world Riflemen are deadly, for example the typical German K98 user in Normandie had SMK rounds to f…[Read more]

Thanks Master Chief. But it still seems that even a lone rifleman, as far as I can see, can take out a massive landing craft with a good shot. A boat so big that it can fit 36 passengers. This cannot be right?
This rule seals the deal brutally : “Remember that the superficial damage modifier only applies to armoured vehicles. Soft-skins suffer…[Read more]

Soft-skinned vehicles (6+) are not automatically destroyed when damage is scored by small arms fire rolling a 6. Damage by small arms against soft-skinned vehicles also need to make the additional roll on the Damage Results Against Vehicles table (Bolt Action 2nd Ed, page 108) to determine the final outcome.

Just checking I’ve got this right…
I can find Landing Craft in a couple of Campaign Books. They have armour 6, except the big mechanised ones that have 7.
Now, it strikes me that the Armour 6 ones are going to take a hammering from any AT guns/tanks, and even a riflemen could destroy it with a single shot. Unless such craft don’t get treated…[Read more]

1. Bolt action writers are notorious for failing to specifically cover every possible rule interaction, particularly with ‘non standard’ units. I would not try to claim a benefit from a weapon not actually being used that turn. It’s not a fantasy game where talismans confer a benefit – having a rifle slung across your back or on the ground nex…[Read more]

Hello everyone,
Nice community here. I got into war gaming earlier this year as a way to occupy my time during quarantine. Assembled a decent fantasy army over the summer. My reading lately though has been all historical and so I decided to delve into Black Powder next. I’ve started assembling a French army. I love the look of the Napo…[Read more]

Yes, evasive works against aircraft. Fighters still roll to hit, so they can reroll.
I don’t think we ever got confirmation about Kamikaze, but we just played that Evasive cancels the Kamikaze reroll.

Hi all!
I’m just starting my Finn Army and have a few comprehension questions about it.
(1) Following the rule about Trained Huntsmen, the following question came to my mind today:
Do my units also get the hit bonus of +1 if they shoot with e.g. SMGs, but also have a Rifle as an alternative armament (like the Kaukopartio)?
…, all models in the…[Read more] -

Answer is yes to both.
You measure range to the nearest visible enemy model, but you are shooting at the unit as a whole, not just that model.
Once you have determined how many hits, you roll for damage then remove casualties caused. On p58, Shooting, Target Takes Casualties, last para you will find the following – “Note that casualties can be…[Read more]

Fighter attack rolls are not modified. Not by range, not by beam, not by target speed, not by torpedo. I know that doesn’t realistically represent tactics such as torpdos going for the beam, and dive bombers flying down the length of the ship.
Thanks, for whatever its worth perhaps the designers simply figured that the aircraft would always be…[Read more]

It would be good to know how the designers and playtesters have resolved these issues, eh?
I did some playtesting of the Beta for Mongoose and lot of playtesting for VAS’s predecessor A Call to Arms. And I suspect admitting that will open myself up for criticism. But please bear in mind that I got no payment for playtesting VaS exce…[Read more]

I was going to say there are some examples of play on YouTube, but since you said, “I have also seen many tutorials on the internet” maybe you have seen some or most of these. One note about the YouTube videos; some of the examples of play are for the First Edition of Bolt Action, and some of the examples of play that are for the Second Edition of…[Read more]

There is nothing to cancel either point blank or long range modifiers 6″ range weapons, so both apply in the over 3″ up to 6″ range band.
The modifier which is not applicable to flamethrowers is as Greg S says, the long range penetration modifier (damage roll), not the long range ‘to hit’ modifier. P67, Weapons, Weapon Special Rules,…[Read more]
