George started the topic Battalion Squares and Attack Columns in the forum Black Powder 5 years ago
I was reading today. It doesn’t seem like battalions squares (and perhaps, too, brigade squares) as well as attack columns weren’t used commonly until the Napoleonic Wars. So, knowing this, should I not allow these formations in my War of Spanish Succession scenarios? How about any other scenarios that precede the Napoleonic Wars? Please advise.

you’d need 6 DDs to protect all the base…
No, I don’t need any DDs to protect the base. Only one to smoke.
If the bridge of the ship is in smoke, then the ship is un-targetable by any attack. As long as the smoke from the first DD reaches and covers the bridge of the CV, the CV is invisible and invulnerable, unless the enemy has a gunship wit…[Read more]

@clockwork, are you on Facebook? If so the wardroom has a document with the commonally used in naval war games abbreviations – although most are NATO to be honest :p

I don’t think this has come up much…if at all
now the diagrams show smoke from the base…but the rules indicate that it should be the bridge – good question will ask the wardroom!
aircraft attacking ships in smoke, I’m tempted to say no they can’t because they wouldn’t be able to see the ships to attack…however I don’t thin the QSR says…[Read more]

As a followup, here’s an example lineup
The bridge of the CV is in the smoke laid by the middle DD and therefore the CV cannot be attacked.
The middle DD is flanked by two evading DDs
The CV cannot fire at anything, because it sees nothing, but that doesn’t matter because she can still launch planes (air ops don’t require line of sight to…[Read more]

DD-wise, the German ones are beasts; just for the HP and guns they bring along. Note the lack of AA though. Japanese DDs with Type 93s are also good for sacrificial anti-capital duty too.
CL-wise, Aganos are lovely little darlings (dem Type 93s) but the Leanders come a close second IMHO
CA-wise, not so sure. The USN CAs with their 9 guns and…[Read more]

Which ships and retrofits do y’all think are the most competitive in the current rule set? I am ignoring beta rules in this post.

Hello all, let’s get back to asking playstyle / rule advice:
Does smoke spawn behind the base of a ship or at the bridge?
Can a ship whose bridge is in smoke (hidden in the smokewall) be attacked by aircraft? Can a ship in smoke fire AA at enemy planes? Can planes in smoke strike ships?
If fighting only enemy planes, what (if anything) is to…[Read more]

“To me as always reulesbook is not clear. ”
I have to disagree with you here.
The rule is quite simply stated – p36, Units, One-Inch Gap, “… units must always end their move 1″ or more from any other unit whether friend or foe.” with a stated exception for close quarters. The second para then adds that you can’t move within 1″ of an enemy…[Read more]

Hello again community and friends,
First, I want to thank all of you for your most helpful replies.
Second, my new issue. I’m painting 4 Dutch grenadiers. I have the crest that went on their helmets. That’s too much detail for me to paint. However, I can print them very small then, as I understand it, one can varnish them onto their caps. Has…[Read more]

Master Chief replied to the topic Are Rifle Grenades a small arm or heavy weapon? in the forum Bolt Action 5 years ago
Yes based on the current rules the rifle grenade adaptor is a heavy weapon. I guess some players would like to see the following added (just to make it absolutely clear) in the next Bolt Action errata:
All rifle grenade adaptors/VB launcher entries in all books. Add the following line:
The rifle grenade adaptor/VB Launcher is considered a heavy…[Read more]

Roger Moore replied to the topic Artillery bases in the forum Black Powder 5 years ago
I base my artillery on 45mm bases but sometimes it is difficult to get the whole crew on. In cases where I cannot get the whole crew on one base I will base the rest of the crew on a separate 15mm x 45mm base thus having a deeper profile rather than a wider one. I wargame in 28mm.
