Hi all, just been looking at the French army lists on p.108. In the main block (1+ Infantry Brigade), it says, under 1-3 Line Infantry Regiments (bold) that “Each regiment must have between 1 and 4”. Obviously a typo, but what must they have 1-4 of?
Thanks in advance,
John.

Oh yes, hedgehogs. I just form the muskets on the flanks of the pike block. It is difficult to make it look ‘pretty’. As hedgehogs don’t get formed too often in our games, we’ve been able to live with it.

The ECW armies would have formed their pike and muskets up in the same depth, which was probably just 6 ranks deep. The depth of formations had thinned during the experience of the Thirty Years War on the continent. So strictly speaking your pike and musket should be the same depth. However, I actually have my pikes in three ranks of 6 figures.…[Read more]

Hi Steve,
What you say is true, so smaller units will have an advantage against largers units. If you are fighting a sceanrio, then you need to cater for this when setting it out.
If you use the “points” system as a guide, you will find that the smaller units become proportionally more expensive that the larger units, so yes, they will be…[Read more]

As far as I can see, in Hail Caesar you are correct. However, with the movement penalties, an open order unit could run rings around a “closed”, without being at risk of getting caught.

Thank you very much. I was in fact just facing this decision when I read your message.
I think the way forward for us, due to the lack of a gargantuan table, is to reduce all distances by 30%. Including unit frontages then.
12 men does seem about right then. (6 wide x 2 deep) (actually 3 bases of 2 x 2 men)
Then I thought what about pikes. …[Read more]

Thanks Invisible Officer. I had a search of our local library system but to no avail. I managed to get a copy of German Naval Camouflage Volume Two 1942-45 by Eric Leon & John Asmussen which seems comprehensive.
Speaking of age, I started by playing the Fletcher Pratt rules hand copied from Donald Featherstone’s Naval Wargames because…[Read more]

I am surprised by the Black Powder/Hail/Pike series in that terrain seems only to affect movement and shooting.
Not seen anywhere that it affects, say, a heavy formed unit, being more easily taken down by lights in rough terrain?Perhaps I am missing something

Bolt Action 2nd Ed rulebook page 42:
WE’RE DOOMED! – ROUTED UNITS
If a unit has as many pin markers as its original morale value, or more, then it is automatically and immediately destroyed – its morale has entirely collapsed and the unit is routed from the field. Thus inexperienced troops are routed once they have 8 pin markers, regular units…[Read more] -

Hello everybody,
i have a question about the shirkers rule.
Does the doubling of the pins apply to shirkers in any case where pins are used?
e.g. when shooting (i.e. a unit with a pin gets a -2 penalty when hitting),
and for the we’re doomed! Rule (i.e. an inexperienced unit with 4 pins is destroyed),
or is the malus only doubled for orders and m…[Read more] -

That is an excellent plan, Sadurian Mike. It does of course take longer to build two forces, but it allows you build the two armies for a particular battle or campaign and have everything for a fun game to put on. My regular gaming group tend to take this approach, often because we are not interested in collecting the same periods at the same…[Read more]

For ECW then most of your foot will be pike and shot. I’m afraid another decision stands before you (part of Pike Shotte’s flexibility). You will need to decide whether to field your foot formations of pike and shot either each as a single unit, or as three separate units, two shot and one pike. (This needs to be the same for both sides in a gam…[Read more]

The best Book is: Die Anstriche und Taarnanstriche der Kriegsmarine by Dieter Jung and others. There you find the corresponding German Marine names from the list linked by you and heaps of originally photos. Captions are in English too.
I met the authours often, they had been the best experts in Germany. Some are dead now, shows how old I…[Read more]

Don’t apologise. That is the purpose of this forum.
In your situation, yes the victorious unit can support the following combat.
This is why you choose the order that the combats are resolved. What a victorious unit does is entirely up to you. The only exception would be certain Special rules, for example Fanatics, who would have to follow up o…[Read more]
