  • Page 20 (main rulebook) under Formations. It tells you all about Skirmish formation.

Basically, it tells you about the different way that units use the formation “Skirmish Order”. As a line unit in “Skirmish Order” is not a unit of skirmishers, they do not benefit from being skirmishers.

I don’t comment much on the supplements because I tend no…[Read more]

  • The ca. 100 men at the Beijing Radio Station in Italian concession under Lt. Cmdr. Baldassarre  had been a mix from army and navy.  The Navy officers and OR wore white naval tropical dress, the OR had a Khaki drill one that some may have worn. The army guys wore  the standard tropical khaki  uniform .  They had only light arms.

    3/4 decided to f…[Read more]

That makes sense, however in the Clash of Eagles light infantry do have the special note – skirmish – yet you also have Russians Line Units with the rule ‘poor skirmisher’ which states that they dont benefit from the +1 bonus for skirmishers shooting…. when they can only do that in mixed formation (Russians dont have the option to form compisite…[Read more]

  • The line aren’t skirmishers, so the modifiers don’t apply to them. They aren’t skirmishing, they have just adopted Open Order to move through the terrain. Skirmishers are trained to operate in the way that they do and are normally in small or tiny units. There can be exceptions, where a full regiment of light infantry are working as a line unit.…[Read more]

  • Perhaps you should be using lots of brigade orders rather than micromanaging battalions. That always slowed us down with Empire back in the day.

I don’t see a way to calculate combat faster. That and picking up each unit to move is really where the time goes.

  • Big Al,

Thank you, that is what I was looking for, that the line does not benefit from being in skirmish formation when shot at is their disadvantage in relation to real skirmishers.  Just wanting to clarify everybody gets the bonus to save from woods. Does everybody also get not a clear target when shot at, and I think was concluded above…[Read more]

  • No, there is no penalty. The line infantry are trained to operate in a loose formation in certain terrain conditions. When they leave the terrain they must adopt their default formation as soon as they can. The skirmish units already have certain advantages in their favour already – dice modifiers for shooting and being shot at. In woods all…[Read more]

  • Another skirmish formation related question. In the main rule book some terrain (like woods) can only be entered in skirmish formation. Many units cannot normally use that formation, but are specifically allowed to to enter terrain the otherwise could not.
My question: do they suffer any disadvantages for being in a formation they can’t normally u…[Read more]

  • Saw an interesting history video about the Italians fighting the Japanese in China. While the Beijing  garrison despite being well equipped ended up surrendering, I always enjoyed the what ifs. Meanwhile Italian troops at the radio station fought for 24 hours and scared the Japanese army to the point that it brought overwhelming force to the…[Read more]

  • Thanks Karl. That’s definitely worth a try. Is that the only ‘change’ you implement? Do you alter anything in terms of game processes?

I was starting to think around how I could develop factors around brigades or half brigades. This would be more akin to moving blocks of troops rather than units. I was wondering if anyone else did something…[Read more]

  • We are usually have games with 2000 pts per side. As we are now playing BP for more than 10 years it works fine. But sometimes we have a 20 minute rule. That means, every player has just 20 minutes for his command phase. It not only speed up the game but it also reflects the stress and the insecurity in the battle. It is fun because it is a lot…[Read more]

  • We have been using BP for games which have used 100+ units of troops. We’ve found that this often becomes difficult to manage, whilst great to see. Has anyone made any rule adaptations for the larger games that enable the pace and flow of the game to be sustained?

  • I received my arc of fire templates from Warbases today. I ordered one each of the 40mm, 50mm and 60mm templates. Attached 2 photos of the 50mm template in use.

  • I do enjoy the modelling and building – it’s just the process of sticking that strange stuff that comes in pots onto them that I have a hard time enjoying!

One thing I’d also like to include is Lt Gruber and his ‘little tank’ – I’m sure that is some model of SdKzw.222, but I don’t know which, or if the kit contains an officer?

  • Re mass painting – I’m not sure of your colour scheme, but I’ve just saved loads of time doing a large Japanese Army by using a spray base coat of the uniform colour. I use shades on my minis, so after doing the base I only have to paint flesh/weapons/boots etc., then shades, then a bit of highlighting.

  • Good morrow gentlefolk,

I am a total novice to this period and returning to war gaming after 20 years and have found that my brains have turned to mush in the interim. I have a few questions regarding P&S and I hope someone will look kindly upon this plea for assistance.  Up front I apologise unreservedly if these questions seem blindingly…[Read more]
