Nanashi started the topic Suggestions for balancing these two 500 point armies? (Late war German v. USSR) in the forum Bolt Action 2 years, 4 months ago
Decided to theory craft a pair of asymmetrical 500 point end-war Volksturm v. Soviets list using only core+the two Armies of books
Germans. I wound up with these two.- Veteran Oberleutnant+1 man with ARs (103 pts)
- 1+9 Volksturm with Bicycles and 1 Panzerfaust (85 pts)
- 1+9 Volksturm with Bicycles and 1 Panzerfaust (85 pts)
- 1+5 Grenadier…

Make Volksturm/Partisan options have all the weapons options the British Home Guard gets as a baseline (pistols, shotguns and more stuff). Half the fun of fielding such irregulars is being able to give them weird mixes of weapons and still make sense.
A minor one that just occurred to me: Make US Paratroopers (and maybe late war marines in a…[Read more]

It can be both inferior in every way and still be both adequate. If there’s a cartridge so bad it merits difference in rules, it’s the 8mm Lebel the French still have not totally gotten rid of by the start of the war.
In-fact, I could totally see Early War French infantry getting the “option” to have Sea Lion’s “stoppages” rule (which better…[Read more]

If you don’t count National Rules which are really just special unit rules that are for some reason explained in national rules section instead of the units section (Tiger Fear, Show your Loyalty, Not One Step Back, and, as the errata and 10 point premium cost over British use of identical vehicles confirm, Gyro-Stabilizers), nations consistently…[Read more]

The “Bren gun was too accurate” thing is a thoroughly debunked myth. The SA80 was never considered accurate except in one official test done for propaganda purposes that measured ”accuracy” in the stupidest way possible so they could claim the program was anything less than a total disaster. In reality the results boiled down to comparing…[Read more]

Despite the name given there, it’s just a BAR variant and decidedly in Automatic Rifle territory.

I was bored so I spent a bit coming up with this. Totally untested, minimally researched. Feedback welcome.
Army Special Rules:
The Callup
All Swedish men 18 to 47 were subject to periods of national service with regular refresher courses and should hopefully remember how to shoot straight when war is declared. Inexperienced Swedish infantry do…[Read more] -

The idea troops would waste all their ammo was claimed about revolvers, then double action revolvers (by no less than Sam Colt himself!), then bolt action rifles, then bolt action rifles without magazine cutoffs, then stripper clip fed bolt actions, then self-loading rifles. It never really worked out like that in practice. It turns out training…[Read more]

For making semi-auto and BA rifles different, I suppose the easiest way to do that would be to decouple the two halves of the Assault keyword, making it into two keywords that don’t use the name of a only semi-related game mechanic (“Assault gives Tough Fighters which improves Assault, but also does other stuff not related to Assault”) like…[Read more]

LMG teams also get that sometimes. That and outranging rifles would indeed make light mortar be good for more than an option to spend remaining points for an order dice+smoke. I’ve seen being able to pay extra to make one of the men accompanying an officer count as a spotter for any one indirect unit in a fanmade list of things for an update. That…[Read more]

With 3rd Edition being seen as inevitable, what changes do you want to see in it?
Myself:
More “generic” platoon options besides Reinforced Platoon, Tank Platoon, and Generic Anti-Tank Gun Reinforced Platoon (which is buried in Battle of France of all places!).
Air Observer not being the utter mess it currently is.
France and Italy in core book…[Read more] -
Nanashi replied to the topic Homebrew:Thoughts on this idea for MMG/HMG teams? in the forum Bolt Action 2 years, 4 months ago
Oh, did misread those when looking for the verbage. Make that “to fire at the end of the turn”.
I think Sniper being a weakness of emplaced MGs is an acceptable and reasonable case of one type of unit countering another. An MG nest is a very reasonable target for a marksman. The problem is more that the advantages aren’t enough to make up for the…[Read more]

Its no secret MMG and HMG teams are way overpriced in Bolt Action and nobody uses them (more mobile vehicle based MMGs are outright cheaper!). The idea of adding 2 shots and no penalty for long range to ground based MGs has been around for a while. While that brings their value per point up, I don’t think that on its own captures the idea of an…[Read more]

March 2022 errata adds “UNIC P107 COMMAND HALF-TRACK” to Germany. It is paying to be a command vehicle though.

I don’t see it specifically addressed, though it does call the tanks “Transport Vehicles”. That’s as part of the question, though it doesn’t mention that being wrong.

I was thinking more along the lines of adding the five as a separate platoon and using it as merely an accessory to a main platoon for the order dice and mobile machine gun nests. It would defiantly need heavy armor and artillery support, but it would be in alternative to small infantry groups with 2 LMGs than an armored force in its own…[Read more]

A platoon of five “Motorcycle with Machine-gun sidecar” is only 230 points (with the network) and four is 190. Each has a MMG (which benefits from Hitler’s Buzzsaw), and recce. Is this actually a viable inclusion in a German list or are the limitations of being in a soft-skin wheeled vehicle too much?

Strangely enough, French get grenade launchers in their army book and can use them even with just that book.

Hey, I’m under zero delusions anyone actually plays on maps where naval units are useful with any regularity. I just think it’s one to include for completeness than anything. Especially since every faction [url=https://www.warlordgames.com/rules-amphibious-assaults/]gets landing craft[/url] (though, at least as far as I can tell, there aren’t any…[Read more]
