That is why I asked the question – to see if anyone else has tried anything different. One idea that I have been thinking on is SR -1 if ordering 2 regiments, SR-2 is ordering 4 or more regiments

Hi Nat,
The Austrians can field a brigade with one regiment. However, doing that does not really save anything as 2 regiments still need 2 command rolls whether they are in the same or different brigades. You also have the probem that any artillery battery will need a sperate command roll to move.
I have played around with small cavalry…[Read more]

In Clash of Eagles, both the Russian and Austrian brigade commanders get some serious command penalties.
The exact phrasing is “Austrian and Russian brigade commanders were not used to manoeuvring brigade-size formations and lacked the very experienced staff that the French army possessed, resulting in a lack of inter-unit cooperation.”
Do…[Read more]

If they have the mixed formation rule the they can. If not they cannot.

Actually, as the points system does not include a cost for mixed formation, so the saxons get a freebie which the Landwher do not get.

OK, so normally units without the skirmish rule cannot be in open order. The one except is when entering such things as wood. Changing to open order requires an order and takes 1 move. So, by my understanding to enter a wood, the non-skirmish unit would require a minimum 2 moves – one to go into open order, and then 1 to enter the terrain.…[Read more]

arcole replied to the topic Brigade orders amd unreliable troops in the forum Black Powder 3 years, 4 months ago
Thanks for the replies. Looking at the description of unreliable on page 105 it says:
if unreliable units are included in a group order with other units this means it is possible for other units to move whilst the unreliable elements remain staunchly immobile.
This doesnt really describe the full impact. However I am tempted to go with…[Read more]

arcole replied to the topic Units within 6 inches of a breaking unit in the forum Black Powder 3 years, 4 months ago
Would the list of units on page 70 apply. E.G. Artillery cannot be supported, so if they break in melee no-one else needs to take a break test. Similarly, a unit already in combat cannot provide support, so should not test for another unit nreaking in combat?

If you give a brigade order the commanders staff rating is usually based on the unit that gives him the lowest value. There is however 1 except.
If you exacly roll the commanders net staff rating then all units get 1 move, except any “unreliable” units. Thes units cannot move on a equal result (page 105). Is the rest of the “brigade” therefore…[Read more]

I also use “Really Useful Boxes”. I line the box with ferrous sheets, and have magna-base on the underside of the figures.

Hi All,
Third game yesterday which has raised a number of queries:
- 1. Closing fire. Cavalry launched a charge at an artillery battery (whose supportng infantry were busy fighting). In closing fire, the artillery caused 3 casualties, forceing the cavalry to make a break test, which they failed on a net 6. My opponent has found a reference for…

arcole replied to the topic Failed square – can unit shoot in closing fire in the forum Black Powder 3 years, 5 months ago
Having given it some thought along with the above comments I am coming to favour the idea that the infantry use their reaction to “form square”. Closing Fire is a specific charge reaction, so cannot be used if they fail to form square. Indeed, why should a unit is such disorder be able to fire when another unit which formed a perfect square…[Read more]

Hi All,
I know that if infantry form square as a charge respone then they are unable to perform closing fire as their reaction is used up. However, what happens if they fail to form square (roll of 2). It happened in yesterdays game. In the end, as we could find nothing to the contrary we permitted them to perform cloing fire but wqas this…[Read more]

Hi All,
Had my second go with BP today, and a resounding Austrian victory. We did however have an issue come up where we were not 100% what to do. We had an infantry unit standing next to an artillery battery. Just under 12 inches away to their front were 2 dragoon regiments. As we unerstood it, you cannot charge the artillery without also…[Read more]

If you look at the table on page 77, a shaken unit will not need to tabke a break test if it won the melee if they lose or draw they will need to take the test.

Hi Mike,
Confused – absolutely!
The Grenadiers and the square are on the same side. The Grenadiers wanted to charge in order to prevent the Grenz column attacking the square.
If the simple answer is that being in proximity range of an enemy only restricts you to moving forward in your front quarter or backwards in your rear quarter then the…[Read more]
