What unit sizes should be used for this period? The seems to suggest that standard unt sizes are used, however, the unit packs from warlord seem to be half sized units.

I am thinking of collection an Austrian Napoleonic army, circa 1813/1814. Unfortunately they are not covered in any of the suplements. Does anyone have a suggestions on the rules to apply to an Austrian force?
Many thanks in advance

arcole replied to the topic Close ranks – who's eligible in the forum Hail Caesar 3 years, 8 months ago
Look at page 66. Close ranks can only be used by heavy infantry equiped with a shield. It is nothing to do with the Phalanx rule, and can be used by heavy infantry in a 2 deep line (e.g. Roman Legionaries). Warbands are medium infantry (at least I am not aware of any heavy infantry warbards), and as such cannot close ranks.

Perhaps I need to get my glasses fixed. Cannot see anywhere what scale these figures are in. To me it looks like 10/12mm. Any ideas?

Hi Steve,
What you say is true, so smaller units will have an advantage against largers units. If you are fighting a sceanrio, then you need to cater for this when setting it out.
If you use the “points” system as a guide, you will find that the smaller units become proportionally more expensive that the larger units, so yes, they will be…[Read more]

As far as I can see, in Hail Caesar you are correct. However, with the movement penalties, an open order unit could run rings around a “closed”, without being at risk of getting caught.

I would suggest that if the charge is going to be cancelled, the skirmishers should still complete as much of the move as possible, stopping say 1″ from the enemy.
Trops doing closing shots “Units that elect to shoot at their enemy in this way are otherwise treated as standing.”
So far I have not seen squares used. However I cant see anyweher…[Read more]

Hi Al,
Why can’t the Light Infantry close ranks?
Charge Response (Page 60):
Stand: This is the default response and often the only option available. The unit remains where it is. In the case of a unit in open order it will close up its ranks as already described.
Close order is a valid formation for Light troops.

A Skirmish unit is facing a light infantry unit in open order, and declares a charge. If the light infantry unit then closes up, does the charge get cancelled?
When skirmishers do get into close combat, and close ranks, do they still count as being in open order?

Don’t forget – Bolt Action is a game not a simulation. Warlord have simlified things a lot.
With agreement of your opponents, you could reclassify the gun as anything you want, but dont forget to adjust the points. Also, for a better HE you would need a much larger crew to feed the beast.

Dont know what if any answer you got, but I would personally not force a wild fighter unit to use that ability against Skirmishers as that would be a bit “gamey”.

Hi Duane,
One thing to note here is that the Hail Caesar lists, and definitions are actually a lot more flexible than other game systems, and the points values are only intended as a rough guide.
The rules include the standard definitions for all troop types, but there are changes in the lists to cover specific troops.
So for instance, a…[Read more]
