Big Al replied to the topic Battle of Granha de Abundancia scenario in the forum Black Powder 3 years, 10 months ago
It means that you will move each brigade in order at their entry point. They might all arrive in the first turn. Of course, there could be order failures which could alter the arrival times of a brigade or two, but you’d have to be pretty unlucky for that to happen. Especially as they are moving on roads and in Column of March, giving a +2 to t…[Read more]

Big Al replied to the topic Are there Napoleonic line infantry in firing poses? in the forum Black Powder 3 years, 10 months ago
Go the the Perry Miniatures website and look there. The Warlord site is mainly interested in their own products and you will often find that other manufacturers kits are listed but not in stock. Warlord Napoleonic figures tend to be in a marching pose. That’s because they are easier to rank up than multiple poses. They are also easier to c…[Read more]

Big Al replied to the topic Napoleonic Artillery in the forum Black Powder 3 years, 10 months ago
Legere, that is correct. The rulebook has a couple of diagrams showing the situation and states that maximising frontage means that you cannot avoid contacting two units when one is a single model artillery piece alongside an infantry unit. However, increasing the artillery frontage and means that the you are unlikely to contact both the artillery…[Read more]

Hi George,
A large unit gets 8 attacks, not 6. Other than that you are correct on everything that you have mentioned.
Oh, and the large unit now suffers a -1 on all of its to hit rolls because it is fighting to its flank.
If you wanted to, you could place all of the large unit’s attacks to the front and not place any against the cavalry – t…[Read more]

Big Al replied to the topic Skirmishers supporting a charge. in the forum Hail Caesar 3 years, 11 months ago
Right, the it would all depend on your order and how you worded it. You should issue a “brigade” order to include both units, something like “this warband and skirmishers will charge the enemy warband.”
as you know, skirmishers cannot charge formed infantry, but the term “charge” does not mean that a unit must make contact. If it is not allowed…[Read more]

I’m with you on avoiding command levels lower than 7 but those with such low command levels need to get off their backsides and move closer to the troops they are giving orders to!

As I said before, look at the section on Commanders in the BP2 rulebook. There is a small table there that you can roll against that gives your Commanders traits. These may be positive or negative and each has an instruction on how he will act.

Nice one, Nat. I was just about to look it up as I’ve just got back home from work.

Big Al replied to the topic Math Issue with Points System in the forum Black Powder 3 years, 12 months ago
I’m not aware of how the points work for Commanders. I don’t use points, so don’t know. I can take a look in the supplements later to see how they’ve handled them. Maybe the Hail Caesar army lists will give a clue as there are quite a few pointed armies in those.

Big Al replied to the topic Artillery in Black Powder in the forum Black Powder 3 years, 12 months ago
Best way, Nat. Understand the main rules before tinkering.
Also, carrying on Garry’s point, don’t forget that the first casualty that a unit receives remains with the unit for the duration of the game. It cannot be rallied off. Once a unit gains a casualty it carries it until the game is over.
It is something that inexperienced players tend…[Read more]

Nat, please don’t mention things that are in the supplements without clarifying that that is where they come from. It confuses the new players who have only the rulebook to go by and will have them searching through looking for it.
The main reason that the game is not a competition game is not because of the points system. As mentioned, points a…[Read more]

Yes, you count the morale save backwards from 6. A 6+ save is 4 points, a 5+ save is 8points and so on. The other thing you have failed to notice is the points for the range of the weapon. In the example, the unit has a smooth ore musket, which has a range of 18 inches. That is 2 points.
So 1 point HtH, 2 points shooting, 12 points morale save of…[Read more] -

Casualties taken from Artillery fire causes a break test. Firstly, if the target takes excess casualties that includes any caused by artillery or if the target becomes disordered.
If artillery is charged and gives closing fire, causing even just one casualty, the charging unit must take a break test. That could destroy any unit and remove it from…[Read more]

Big Al replied to the topic Question about orders in the forum Black Powder 4 years ago
Ok, so here is how it works. Your brigade commander (brigadier) can issue an order to each unit individually, or his entire brigade as a single order (there are conditions to that). If he tries to order a single unit and fails the roll. That is his command phase over. Other units within his brigade could be given an order by the army general,…[Read more]

Big Al replied to the topic Cavalry charge interactions with infantry special rules in the forum Black Powder 4 years ago
1) Yes you are correct. The cavalry bursting through has caught everyone by surprise and they don’t have time to react in any way. The last paragraph of the section on Sweeping Advance and Charge is very clear – enemy can only hold their ground or turn to face if they are cavalry. Nothing vague there and very explicit!
2) The Combat is not a d…[Read more]

Big Al replied to the topic Brigade Generals Rating 7 in the forum Black Powder 4 years ago
Most people I know don’t use points. However, it is up to you. If you want to reduce the command level of your Commanders, you do it. The general thing with command ratings is not to go below 5 or above 9 (except for certain generals like Wellington or Napoleon).
Secondly, the Attack Column only gives a +1 to the command roll, not +2 unless the c…[Read more]

Big Al replied to the topic Mixed Formations – when to use? in the forum Black Powder 4 years ago
Yes, Peter, that’s right, it does in BP2. But it is only artillery that ignores skirmishers at that range. Also, as we are talking about Mixed Formation, all casualties are on the unit, regardless of whether the skirmishers are hit or not.
