Stuart Harrison replied to the topic French Cavalry Carbines in the forum Bolt Action 1 year, 5 months ago
Carbines are treated like a pistol when mounted and like a rifle when on foot. Pistols and carbines are the only weapons that can be fired when mounted – p89, Unit Special Rules, Cavalry, fifth paragraph.

Stuart Harrison replied to the topic Unit with some Tough Fighters v. Gurkhas in the forum Bolt Action 1 year, 6 months ago
The second question has your answer:
“Tough as boots vs Gurkha?
The unit calculates its attacks (counting ‘tough as boots’), then it halves its attacks.
Tough as boots, some with SMGs, vs Gurkhas? The unit calculates its attacks (counting Tough as Boots), then it halves its
attacks, then the player can re-roll as many hits as there are tou…[Read more] -
Stuart Harrison replied to the topic HE Pen and damage to units in buildings. in the forum Bolt Action 1 year, 6 months ago
1. Yes, and you’re looking for the wrong thing with applying the pen value – can you find anything that suggests it DOESN’T apply in buildings? You have a general rule that it applies, unless you have a specific rule that it doesn’t apply in that situation, it still applies.
2. It’s not similar. In case of the transport, the unit is not the ta…[Read more]

Stuart Harrison replied to the topic Tough Fighters and Sub Machine Guns in the forum Bolt Action 1 year, 6 months ago
No. There is no stacked advantage from having tough fighters via different sources. That’s why most units with tough fighters built in get a discount on their SMGs – they’re only getting the shooting advantage, not any close quarters advantage.

Stuart Harrison replied to the topic Spotter and Transports in the forum Bolt Action 1 year, 6 months ago
The errata tells you why they can’t fire the weapons – the spotter rules specifically prohibit a spotter from shooting. ‘Spotters similarly cannot fire weapons and cannot spot while
in the transport (extending to them the rules for HQs, whichcannot use their special rules while transported)’ -
Stuart Harrison replied to the topic Transports that are also tows. Can they do both in the same game? in the forum Bolt Action 1 year, 6 months ago
Yes. It’s covered p117, Vehicles, Transport Vehicles, Towing Guns, third para, end of the sentence ‘…, which will therefore not be able to carry any other troops until the artillery unit unlimbers.’ (first part is about an artillery unit taking all the space).

Stuart Harrison replied to the topic Measuring From Vehicles in the forum Bolt Action 1 year, 6 months ago
P99, Vehicles, Vehicles and Measuring Distance. “… most distances are measured to and/or from the closest point of the hull of the model itself, including when firing the vehicle’s weapons.”
That applies unless you see a specific exception. None come to mind (doesn’t mean there aren’t any, just I haven’t had my first coffee of the day 😉 ).

Stuart Harrison replied to the topic LMG team? in the forum Bolt Action 1 year, 6 months ago
Most armies no, only within squads. The Germans have an entry for a separate LMG team in a couple of Campaign books.

Stuart Harrison replied to the topic Artillery and Small Team in the forum Bolt Action 1 year, 6 months ago
No. Mortars and Machine guns are infantry, and more specifically for this rule, infantry support team weapons. The weapons are not distinct models within the unit, even if you model them on their own bases. See p35, Units, Types of Units for the definitions of infantry and artillery units – only artillery defines the gun as a model within th…[Read more]

Stuart Harrison replied to the topic Artillery and Small Team in the forum Bolt Action 1 year, 7 months ago
The rule applies to units that ‘consist of either one or two infantry models’ – artillery units by definition consist of the gun model itself and a number of crew models, so it can never consist of one or two infantry models (the FAQ confirms that the intent of the term ‘consists’ as excluding anything else).
“If I shoot at a unit of artillery…[Read more] -
Stuart Harrison replied to the topic Firing Extra Weapons On Transports in the forum Bolt Action 1 year, 7 months ago
One passenger per additional weapon, so your example is correct.
The rule you’re looking for is p114, Vehicles, Transport Vehicles, Role of Transports, third para – note the last part about the modifiers for the shot being dependent on the experience/pins of the model firing each weapon, so it matters which is the weapon you declare as fired by…[Read more]

Stuart Harrison replied to the topic Empire in Flames Query (Dug In) in the forum Bolt Action 1 year, 7 months ago
You are correct, down is +2 to hit, as is anything that ‘counts as down’.
Empires in Flames is a theatre book – theatre books were published under first edition when down was only +1 to hit.

Stuart Harrison replied to the topic Japanese Grenadier Squad question in the forum Bolt Action 1 year, 8 months ago
Lorenzo is incorrect on the splitting fire question, see the last para of the indirect fire rules, p72. That provision was missing in first editon, added in FAQ, then written into the rules for second edition.

Stuart Harrison replied to the topic Firing from Building in the forum Bolt Action 1 year, 8 months ago
As Nat says for 1a and 2, 1b there is specific provisions for units in buildings to split fire – all models shooting from a particular side of the building must target the same unit unless they have another provision to split fire (one shot, indirect fire weapon). See p123 Buildings, Shooting from Buildings, first para, fourth sentence.

Stuart Harrison replied to the topic Running from a ruins or rough ground to mount a vehicle in the forum Bolt Action 1 year, 8 months ago
@ Steeljackal – fixed weapons couldn’t be moved in rough terrain with a run order so a specific exception had to be inserted in the errata allowing it.
Again, specific exceptions don’t change/remove the general rule. In this case, I’d say they confirm it by needing the exception.

Stuart Harrison replied to the topic Can Medic attendants shoot? in the forum Bolt Action 1 year, 8 months ago
As Arty Gun says, the rule applies to the medic unit as a whole, not just the medic model, so no model in the unit can fire.

Stuart Harrison replied to the topic Running from a ruins or rough ground to mount a vehicle in the forum Bolt Action 1 year, 9 months ago
As written, I’d say you are correct. ‘Should’ is a basis for discussing a house rule for when the situation comes up in future, it doesn’t change the definition of ‘no run’ terrain. Same goes for exceptions in specific circumstances – they don’t change the general rule.

Stuart Harrison replied to the topic Should I introduce my oldman to BA with his old 1/72 scale soldiers in the forum Bolt Action 1 year, 9 months ago
One common conversion is simply to use centimetres instead of inches for smaller scales – alternatively you can leave the measurements alone and enjoy a slightly less crowded looking table.

One hit, specifically hitting the top armour.
-
Stuart Harrison replied to the topic Question: Bombardament preparatory in the forum Bolt Action 1 year, 9 months ago
Only one hit, not a template or anything else, so only one model in the unit can take damage.
