Stuart Harrison replied to the topic Are there any non-open top 7+/8+ vehicle with a Medium Howitzer besides BT-42? in the forum Bolt Action 1 year, 11 months ago
None that come to mind – they’re generally either heavier armoured to carry out the assault gun/close support roles(Stuh42, Sherman 105, etc), or they’re open topped to allow the crew to better serve the gun in the mobile field artillery role (Priest, Wespe, etc).

Similar guidelines in the FAQ:
Can armies use captured vehicles? For example, the Russians used
captured German vehicles and vice-versa“No, they cannot, at least by a strict application of the rules about forming reinforced platoons.
However, we have used ‘captured vehicles’ (or indeed ‘allied vehicles’)
in many friendly games, and it’s ve…[Read more] -
Stuart Harrison replied to the topic Homebrew:Thoughts on this idea for MMG/HMG teams? in the forum Bolt Action 2 years ago
” I think most people would want consistency to any new improvements to MG rules that work across all types.”
Very much NO. Vehicle MGs are already good enough (arguably too good – look at the early war MG tanks and how effective they are).
People are specifically looking for a fix for infantry MGs, not another buff for already strong vehicle MGs.

Stuart Harrison replied to the topic Homebrew:Thoughts on this idea for MMG/HMG teams? in the forum Bolt Action 2 years ago
Not a fan as it takes away one of the main penalties of being a fixed weapon – you don’t get to fire in the same turn you relocate. By moving and going into Ambush you not only get to change position (probably fall back to maintain the distance from shorter ranged units), you then get to fire at those enemy units without a movement penalty if…[Read more]

Stuart Harrison replied to the topic "Tank" Platoon full of of Motorcycle with Machine-gun Sidecar? in the forum Bolt Action 2 years ago
SteveT – if you try that reasoning, be prepared for your opponent to claim side, rear and top armour penetration modifiers when shooting at it. Soft skins ignore those penetration modifiers by virtue of not being ‘armoured vehicles’.
I’m with Nat – the slot a soft skin is in for selection can’t change it into an armoured vehicle. That’s a…[Read more]

@ SteveT – “Having the command network bonus might be good, ” – If you mean Radio Networks, they’re useless to soft skins. Tank War, p13, Radio Networks, Armoured Platoon Commander, first para, second sentence – “The Radio Network adds one to the Command Vehicle’s morale bonus when adding it’s bonus to any armoured vehicle that form part of that…[Read more]

Stuart Harrison replied to the topic Free units in the forum Bolt Action 2 years ago
FAQ:
“Does a ‘free’ unit take up a Force Selection slot? Or could a British
player with two reinforced platoons field three artillery observers? If
not does that mean the Russian or French ‘free’ squad counts towards
the maximum number of squads per platoon?
The free units are additional to the Selectors. In each cases it’s +1
per army, not per platoon” -
Stuart Harrison replied to the topic Marine War Dog team in the forum Bolt Action 2 years ago
Looking at the entry in Empire in Flames, the dog isn’t a distinct model in game terms, it’s just a handler who happens to have a dog as a piece of equipment (the dog actually appears in the weapons line) which gives the unit an ability.
The dog wouldn’t be considered at all when working out combat.

“A force for a skirmish game “cannot include […] Artillery (i.e. field artillery, anti-tank guns and anti-aircraft guns)”. ”
There are three basic types of units in the game, Infantry, Artillery, and Vehicles. In this case, the list is sub types/classes of Artillery. The Sahariana is not Artillery, it’s a Vehicle.
“A force for a skirmis…[Read more]

Stuart Harrison replied to the topic Non-open top transports other than the French? in the forum Bolt Action 2 years, 1 month ago
Campaign: Road to Berlin has a Polish Home Army modified SdKfz 251 with enclosed roof (p56), but that’s the only other fully enclosed transport that comes to mind.

Stuart Harrison replied to the topic Advanced BA Rules Questions: Kaukopartio Long Distance Recon w/ Transports in the forum Bolt Action 2 years, 1 month ago
@Rage – the OT130 is added to the Soviets in Ostfront, p31. It makes mention of the OT133 as a minor modification that would have little effect in game (turret moved to the other side, and larger fuel tank). There is no mention of which selectors it is available for, or any provision for the Finns to use it.

Stuart Harrison replied to the topic Advanced BA Rules Questions: Kaukopartio Long Distance Recon w/ Transports in the forum Bolt Action 2 years, 1 month ago
Unit abilities/special rules don’t get transferred to any transport they may happen to be in, so that would be a no unless specifically stated in their special rules (and it isn’t).

Stuart Harrison replied to the topic Air strikes – target moves in the forum Bolt Action 2 years, 1 month ago
Artillery barrage targets a point on the ground – units in the danger area can move away and are only at risk again if you get a delay and move the impact point.
Air strike targets a unit – if the unit moves, the strike moves with it. If the target is destroyed and you don’t get a rookie pilot or delay result, it’s wasted.

@Neely Clapp – they are not ‘in soft skin vehicles’. They are an infantry unit with a movement upgrade, and are ‘…generally treated as infantry except as noted below…’ (motorbike rules, second para). Found this on the AWM London site which seems to comfirm the impression I had above:

Other than POWs moved to the Thai/Burma railway from Changi, closest deployment of Australians I can think of would be Borneo – Curtin opposed Churchill’s orders (given assuming Australia’s approval) to send the 6th and 7th Divisions to Burma after the 8th Division was lost in…[Read more]

Stuart Harrison replied to the topic Clarification for playing Motorcycle troop correctly. in the forum Bolt Action 2 years, 2 months ago
I would say this bit “But, if the motorcycle squad advances 12” the riders can then dismount and advance as Regular infantry” is conflating a unit that dismounts from it’s optional bikes with an embarked unit disembarking from a transport that has advanced. The first is a single unit acting on one Advance order. The latter is two separate uni…[Read more]
