Charge The Guns replied to the topic Epic Battles – unit scale for converting battles? in the forum Pike & Shotte 1 year, 7 months ago
Hi Alexander, I think 600, or 300 for cavalry, would work quite nicely for standard size units in larger battles. It was common in this period to form battlefield units in standard sizes, normally having to amalgamate and split different regiments to achieve this.
In the Epic P&S rule pool they point out that what your unit represents would…[Read more]

Charge The Guns replied to the topic Epic Reference sheet? in the forum Pike & Shotte 1 year, 7 months ago
Hi AJ, I’ve got my copy of the Epic rule book now and had a chance to go through it. While the summary reference sheet at the end of the Epic book is differently formatted to the the original QRS, and some different types of info are reflected, the actual factors, even down to move distances, are the same. This means the original QRS is just as u…[Read more]

Hi AJ – I don’t think there is a separate QRS from Warlord yet. I have not got my Epic P&S book yet either, to see if the regular P&S QRS has changed. It has only just been released so might be a bit early for home brew versions 😀.

Charge The Guns replied to the topic Hail Caesar played with 15 mm miniatures in the forum Hail Caesar 1 year, 8 months ago
Hi Marco – we have quite a lot of 15mm armies for the period left over from the days of DBM etc. These are all based on 40mm frontage elements. For HC we tend to use three of these 40mm element bases to make up 1 HC standard sized unit. Depth of unit to taste really. With this system a large unit is 4 x 40mm bases wide, and a small unit 2 x 40…[Read more]

Charge The Guns replied to the topic Not clear target and Home Home in the forum Pike & Shotte 1 year, 8 months ago
Hi Matt,
For the cover issue, we play that troops in cover count as not clear. I think it’s an omission. If you don’t use this then troops in cover do still get an improved save. It comes down to how much benefit you think troops in cover should get.
On ‘Home Home’ I think the whole battalia, as this seems in the spirit of the wording and is simpler.

Here is the latest unit of Polish ‘Winged’ Hussars for my 1620s Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth army. These are 28mm, mostly from Warlord Games. Flag and pennons from Wargames Designs, and a converted casualty marker.

Charge The Guns replied to the topic Epic Pike & Shotte, question about figures in the forum Pike & Shotte 1 year, 9 months ago
Hi Matt – I suggest you check out ‘Millers Miniatures’ YouTube channel and his latest video in which he reviews the actual sprues. There are some nice single firing musketeers on the cavalry sprue. He also compares the figures to Steel Fist Miniatures 15mm line and they look spot on to me.

Charge The Guns replied to the topic Epic Pike & Shotte, question about figures in the forum Pike & Shotte 1 year, 9 months ago
Hi Matt, I think the pose is a limitation of the strip approach and the moulding process. The pikemen ‘at porte’ with the pikes forward are sideways on the sprue (pics of the sprues on the Warlord site). There are individual musketeers firing on the cavalry sprue to use as dismounted dragoons, commanded shot etc. To get a strip of figure…[Read more]

Charge The Guns replied to the topic Thematic Byzantine, Heavy Tagmata Kavallarioi in the forum Hail Caesar 1 year, 9 months ago
Yes, I got in to wargaming just as WRG 6th came out. This was the era of Javelin, Dart and Heavy Throwing Weapon combos. I can remember Byzantines having all sorts of cool kit with integral archers in units and loads of armour. They seemed very cool to teenage me, so I’m not sure why I never collected them. It may have been becuase I could…[Read more]

Gosh – those are stunning! Wonderful paintwork on those. It is a very tempting army. Was it this one that Phil B described as the ‘Rolls Royce of Byzantine armies’ in the WRG list book ? 🙂

Charge The Guns replied to the topic Supports in the forum Black Powder 2 years ago
Hi G, supports is one area that always causes our group confusion when we move between BP and P&S. here is our take on your questions.
a. In BP you can issue a brigade order to charge and support, but you can’t in P&S.
b. You’re right, in both sets, only the main unit that charged can sweeping advance.
c. Same for both sets again. Only the uni…[Read more]

Charge The Guns replied to the topic Thoughts on using Spanish guerrillas in the forum Black Powder 2 years, 1 month ago
An interesting question, Richard. Guerrillas would be a nice way to add some additional colour to a Peninsula battlefield. I would seem them as small units of skirmishers, taking the odd pot shot from cover; more of an annoyance than a big threat, but perhaps enough for the French to have to send some Voltiguers to get rid of them. I can’t see…[Read more]

Charge The Guns replied to the topic cost of Spanish Guerrillas? in the forum Black Powder 2 years, 1 month ago
Hi Richard, after a quick glance through it looks like you’re right and guerrillas, although included in the run through of Spanish troops, are missed out of the points summary at the end of the book.

Charge The Guns replied to the topic regiment vs battalion cost in the forum Black Powder 2 years, 2 months ago
Hi Richard – short answer: For Napoleonics you pay for a battalion, as in BP the basic infantry ‘unit’ on the table represents a battalion.
Long Answer!
Regiments and battalions can be confusing and sometimes we use the term interchangeably which can lead to further confusion. Typically a Regiment was an army organisational unit that cont…[Read more]

Charge The Guns replied to the topic Stands per unit in the forum Black Powder 2 years, 2 months ago
Hi Richard, the Black Powder rules don’t operate on ‘stands’. The rules differentiate units in to Small, Regular and Large. All units have to fit in to into one of these categories. You need to decide a rough frontage for each size of unit, and the only key thing is to make sure both sides in a a battle have roughly the same frontage for each si…[Read more]

Charge The Guns replied to the topic BP2 – clear shot in the forum Black Powder 2 years, 4 months ago
Yes, perhaps an additional explanation box in the ‘clear shot’ section would help. Your example is not overly obscure so it would be good to call it out.
To be honest, I’m not sure we are always consistent on how we deal with this situation game to game, but as long as both sides are happy on the day, and it seems reasonable, then it all comes…[Read more]

Charge The Guns replied to the topic BP2 – clear shot in the forum Black Powder 2 years, 4 months ago
Hi East,
I think this situation needs to be considered ‘a gap’ and so top of p48 needs to be applied (also last of the ‘not clear’ explanation boxes). The key bit for me is that the unit is trying to shoot through less than its own frontage.
Our club tends to drop the number of shooting dice in this situation, with such a significant ‘masking…[Read more]
