Charge The Guns replied to the topic Rules Question Thread in the forum Black Powder 3 years, 3 months ago
Hi Arcole, in my view a unit could be ‘stranded’ in open order just outside of a wood while it tries to get the order off to move in or reform after coming out. Being in open order it should suffer the -1 for skirmishers in melee so that it is vulnerable to being attacked.

I needed a Lord General command base for my New Model Army. Started with a Warlord metal figure and then converted to add some whimsical character. Changed the hat for a classic three bar English pot, and went on from there.

Charge The Guns replied to the topic Brigade orders amd unreliable troops in the forum Black Powder 3 years, 4 months ago
I would say that the brigade integrity is important when the order is given. In the example you give, I think the other unit should all follow the order they are given, ignoring the unreliable units. The special rule is there to make unreliable units more difficult to command, and this sort of foul up, with some units moving and some not, seems to…[Read more]

Charge The Guns replied to the topic Redoubt’s and fleches in the forum Black Powder 3 years, 4 months ago
That is a tricky one, Peter. I can see arguments for and against. I can imagine troops in the safety of the redoubt ignoring the rout of nearby friends, but also what happens if those routing friends rout back in to the redoubt for safety and spread panic. The first option, where the defenders ignore the break, makes the redoubt more valuable s…[Read more]

Another vote for Really Useful Boxes (RUB). 4L for regular infantry and 9L for pikemen and lancers. They do most of their boxes in different colours and so you can colour code your collections. I like mine with MDF as shown. Some of the MDF laser cut firms produce inserts especially designed for RUB.

Great battle report, JW 👍. I really like the way Hedgehogs are very tough, but will eventually crumble under fire etc. Very atmospheric.

Charge The Guns replied to the topic Austrian Napoleonic in the forum Black Powder 3 years, 8 months ago
Hi Archie – great to hear that there are some stats in Clash. I don’t know much about the Austrian Landwehr, but I’d guess they were worse than the line. In the Prussian army the Landwehr were fairly efficient by 1815, and I don’t know if the Austrian Landwehr reached this level. Perhaps IO has some more info?

Charge The Guns replied to the topic Using BP rules with 15mm or 10mm in the forum Black Powder 3 years, 8 months ago
Hi Nigel. In my group we also use 4 x 28mm on a 40mm by 40mm base. We typically have 6 bases for a regular unit (24 figs), 4 bases for a small (16 figs) and 8 bases for a large unit (32 figs). You will note that two small units equal one large. This makes sense to us as a small unit is typically 2 stamina and a large is 4 (for ‘normal’ troops…[Read more]

Charge The Guns replied to the topic Is there part of a rule missing in shieldwall supplement in the forum Hail Caesar 3 years, 8 months ago
Hi Skh25. I don’t believe there is anything missing from the Shiedwall special rule. I suspect the bit you are reading in the description is just hyperbole, and not expected to translate in to some tangible part of the rule. In Shieldwall your defence/resilience increases, you are less effective offensively, and you are slower. Seems a fair…[Read more]

Charge The Guns replied to the topic A Dark and Bloody Background in the forum Black Powder 3 years, 8 months ago
Obviously Warlord would like you to buy their figures, but the rules and supplement aren’t written on the basis of any particular figure sets you buy from anywhere. If you want a regular sized unit to be 18 figs then that will work ok.
Whether your unit represents a company or a battalion etc. is down to scale. In some conflicts the battles wer…[Read more]

Hi Arcole – it’s interesting that such a major force in the wars doesn’t have a supplement yet. There have been some plastics out for Austrians for a bit now and so with more figures on the table I expect we’ll see some unofficial lists from people soon. My own view is probably biased by being brought up on Bruce Quarrie’s Napoleon’s Campaigns i…[Read more]

Charge The Guns replied to the topic A Dark and Bloody Background in the forum Black Powder 3 years, 8 months ago
Hi Arcole – Do you mean unit size in terms of ‘small’, ‘ regular’, and ‘large’ or in terms of unit frontages, over perhaps figures? Like all of the BP games the key things is that units of the same games size (‘small’, ‘ regular’, and ‘large’) have the same frontage in both armies. How many figures you use in a unit is probably dependent on the…[Read more]

Charge The Guns replied to the topic Using BP rules with 15mm or 10mm in the forum Black Powder 3 years, 8 months ago
We used BP quite a lot for 15mm Naps and ACW. We’ve halved the number of inches (perhaps some club members don’t have rules with centimetres? 😉 ). We have never really worried about the relationship of move / weapon ranges and unit frontages. The key thing we’ve tried to do with unit frontages is have the two sides have the same basic fr…[Read more]

Charge The Guns replied to the topic How do you handle Battalia orders and distance in the forum Pike & Shotte 3 years, 8 months ago
Hi Skh25, sorry, I’m a bit confused – but happens easily 🤪!
My understanding is; on each command dice roll, you are either issuing an order to a single unit, or to a group of units at once (a battalia order). If it is an order to a single unit then you measure the distance to the single unit and apply that modifier. If you are issuing to a gro…[Read more]

Charge The Guns replied to the topic How do you handle Battalia orders and distance in the forum Pike & Shotte 3 years, 8 months ago
Hi skh25. I think the standard interpretation is, that if you try to issue a battalia order, and it fails, then no one gets the order. There is no picking and choosing. In effect, but adding in extra units, beyond command range, you are increasing the risk of no order getting through to anyone. I don’t see there is any other way to interpret this?
