Garry Wills replied to the topic Failed square – can unit shoot in closing fire in the forum Black Powder 3 years, 1 month ago
Interesting discussion. You can argue it both ways, i.e. the troops opened a disordered fire thus preventing the formation of square or as Nat says the unit’s officers spent all their time trying and failing to form square. As written the rules on page 89, don’t preclude the infantry firing disordered. However, I think this is due to loose…[Read more]

Well, the French flank company epaulettes normally had not been fixed to the coat by sewing. Like officer ones they had been removable for cleaning. Nice for parade but in action they take every position one might think of. I have in my collecion many uniforms with epaulettes and most rotate. Only those sewn to the coat do not move to str…[Read more]

No, because your charge response is to form square not perform closing fire.
The same as if you tell a unit to perform 3 moves then fail the order roll. You’ve made the response of form square, just the guys have blundered and not managed to do so before the enemy cavalry hit home.

Great battle report, JW 👍. I really like the way Hedgehogs are very tough, but will eventually crumble under fire etc. Very atmospheric.

It is a bit of a pickle, as with any game that evolves. They really should have included a lot more of the common rules (like some terrain and weather stuff) in the rulebook. And take out all the basic army lists in it, nobody uses those.
Hopefully this will all be in v3…
But I think people are not going to be happy at forking out for a…[Read more]

The word you are looking for is consistency – something the organic nature of the game is missing.
the issue is simple, it’s not written as a pickup war game….easy campaign book is written separately and looked at separately. So if the author thinks that a unit or equipment should be portrayed differently they redo it (see trenches, dr…[Read more]

Garry Wills replied to the topic Heavy Cavalry Question in the forum Black Powder 3 years, 1 month ago
Totally agree, even then it might be a bit much given that they also get two extra combat dice. The average +2 to combat resolution is equivalent to 5 extra combat dice, so all together it is like being attacked by two normal units.

Garry Wills replied to the topic Units within 6 inches of a breaking unit in the forum Black Powder 3 years, 1 month ago
Yes the example given following my quotation spells it out. Yesterday, I refought Venta del Pozo and the French lost a third of their force when a squadron of Gendarmes broke, quickly followed by both supports! Three scores of 4 or less in a row!
Best regards
Garry

And I humbly and happily stand corrected, Garry. Thanks for pointing that out.
So, that means any unit that could lend support, wither it does or not has to make a break test should a that is in melee fail it’s break test. Yes.

I like these forums because we always have the opportunity to learn about the games we love. However on page 78 at the bottom of the first paragraph it reads ‘For purposes of this test, supporting units are considered to be such if they are theoretically able to support regardless of whether they actually contribute a support bonus or…[Read more]

Yes it is added to the combat resolution. Hvy Cav +1 is approximately the equivalent of adding 3 close combat dice, so a big effect.

Hello,
I see there are 2 kinds of heavy cavalry. There is one that gets a 1d3 modifier and another that gets just +1 modifier. Both these modifiers are applied the same way as I understand it, with the 1d3 modifier being better as it can become a +1, +2, or a +3. Yes?
The next question is where this modifier is applied. Is it to the “to hit”…[Read more]

Sorry, Garry, I have to respectfully call you on the reply above where you say a unit “supports the combat or not” within a 6″ circle.
Units that do not support a unit within 6″ do not make a break test. Only units that support a unit that breaks make the test. The rules are on page 70 for supports and page 78 for support break tests in BP2ed.…[Read more]

Supporting units – pg 70, units within 6″ may support a unit in combat
pg 77 break tests – Supporting units test if the unit that they where supporting fails its break test.

SteveT replied to the topic What is the purpose of the new "A Clash of Heroes Starter Set" ? in the forum SPQR 3 years, 1 month ago
Yes, it is a little silly. It buys into the legend of the Roman’s invincible military strength, propaganda put forth mostly by ancient Roman sources (!). They were good, but not that good. If they were as amazing as they advertised, it wouldn’t have taken them YEARS to conquer the Gallic and other provinces from a bunch of “barbarians”, and…[Read more]
