Charge The Guns replied to the topic Using BP rules with 15mm or 10mm in the forum Black Powder 3 years, 3 months ago
Hi Nigel. In my group we also use 4 x 28mm on a 40mm by 40mm base. We typically have 6 bases for a regular unit (24 figs), 4 bases for a small (16 figs) and 8 bases for a large unit (32 figs). You will note that two small units equal one large. This makes sense to us as a small unit is typically 2 stamina and a large is 4 (for ‘normal’ troops…[Read more]

Okay, more to ask.
6. There seem to be no movement penalties for moving up a hill or down one. Am I missing something? Shouldn’t I slow down a bit going up a hill?

Hello,
Well I got two armies now. One is Dutch (under a British COC) and the the other is Bavarian (under a French COC). Each army has a 3 regiment brigade of cavalry, a 3 battalion brigade of infantry, and a battery of 8lb smoothbore artillery.
So, I played a solitaire first game with Black Powder rules. I enjoyed testing the rules but came up…[Read more]

Charge The Guns replied to the topic Is there part of a rule missing in shieldwall supplement in the forum Hail Caesar 3 years, 3 months ago
Hi Skh25. I don’t believe there is anything missing from the Shiedwall special rule. I suspect the bit you are reading in the description is just hyperbole, and not expected to translate in to some tangible part of the rule. In Shieldwall your defence/resilience increases, you are less effective offensively, and you are slower. Seems a fair…[Read more]

Many also fought in Channel, for example single ones used with MTB to back them. In October 42 a mixed force of 8 MTB, tw Hunt I and three Hunt III (with 2 TT each) attacked the German raider Komet, escorted by T 4,10,14 and 19. RN attributed the sinking to a torpedo from MTB 236 but the Torpedoboote noticed no torpedo hit but a fire caused by…[Read more]

With UPS / Customs still blocking my book sent in January I will still not order anything from Warlord.
So scratch building. This time a typical vessel of East coast and Channel fights., a Hunt I. The type had many clashes with German S-Boote and Torpedoboote.
The original design asked for a small AA destroyer with 6x 4” guns, a quad 2pdr Po…[Read more]

Obviously Warlord would like you to buy their figures, but the rules and supplement aren’t written on the basis of any particular figure sets you buy from anywhere. If you want a regular sized unit to be 18 figs then that will work ok.
Whether your unit represents a company or a battalion etc. is down to scale. In some conflicts the battles wer…[Read more]

Steeljackal replied to the topic Ground Scale in the forum Bolt Action 3 years, 4 months ago
<p style=”text-align: left;”>But BA is not so abstract in ground and miniatures scale. A building represent a building, not a whole village. in fact the regulation says to draw line of sight and measure fire range from the single windows, not from the building as an abstract and symbolic representation of a building or set of buildings. each…[Read more]

Hi Nigel,
re frontage yes in line they would have the same frontage, ie small unit of 8 models of Cav take up the same foot print at 16 infantry. when in line.
For whats easier, depends who you are planning on playing. As IO said, ask potential opponents, you may be able to combine orders and get cheaper delivery OR they already have a force…[Read more]

If you like painting (or like me love it) 28mm has no alternative but 40mm. But if you are one of those that dislike it 15 mm, 10 or even 6 mm are good options.
I have 28 mm Napoleonics and 6 mm. In that later small scale I can field large armies in a 1/10 ratio and can use the table size better. But at the end, nothing better than the view…[Read more]

I would definitely recommend going with 15mm rather than 28mm, the key benefit is that the normal size playing area will represent significantly greater battlefield and give better games as a result, this is particularly important with respect to the depth of the table. I have been gaming with 15 mm for a long time, but if I was starting again I…[Read more]

invisible officer replied to the topic French Curassier query in the forum Black Powder 3 years, 4 months ago
In Peninsula the Cuirassiers give you some problems. The 13th rgt there was formed 1808 from 1st provisional rgt de Cuirassiers, a marching regiment from 1st,2nd,3rd Cuirassiers and 1st and 2nd Carabiniers. Nobody knows about a change of dress by the Carabiniers. Did they get Cuirassier stuff before leaving France? In 1809 the ragged uni…[Read more]

I agree 99%.
But would rate the Jäger much higher than Voltigeurs. They are the original Riflemen, not the Sharp copy. 😉
Voltigeurs are equal to the Light infantry battlions- And the Grenzer are a mix etween Light and Line. By 1814 all the areas lost to France and the new recruits hated the French a lot.
Not to forget, 1813/14 th…[Read more]

Nat replied to the topic Ships Used as Scouts in the forum Victory At Sea 3 years, 4 months ago
A) target is to get 5 or more… so a 4 will give you the scouting point. So if you get 1-3 re-roll the dice… if you get 1-3 again hard luck no SP for that ship.
B &C)A ship is scouting, so not available for the start of the battle, irrespective of if it gives you a scouting point or not. The only way to return it to your fleet is with e…[Read more]

Charge The Guns replied to the topic Austrian Napoleonic in the forum Black Powder 3 years, 4 months ago
Hi Arcole – it’s interesting that such a major force in the wars doesn’t have a supplement yet. There have been some plastics out for Austrians for a bit now and so with more figures on the table I expect we’ll see some unofficial lists from people soon. My own view is probably biased by being brought up on Bruce Quarrie’s Napoleon’s Campaigns i…[Read more]

Hi Arcole – Do you mean unit size in terms of ‘small’, ‘ regular’, and ‘large’ or in terms of unit frontages, over perhaps figures? Like all of the BP games the key things is that units of the same games size (‘small’, ‘ regular’, and ‘large’) have the same frontage in both armies. How many figures you use in a unit is probably dependent on the…[Read more]
