wouldnt be the first FAQ answer that directly contradicts the rulebook…. look at the rece movement entries…. I’d take that answer as being for that unit only at best or ignore it totally at worse.

Having said that, if your gaming group is happy for your NCOs to be loaders then go for it… double penalty when the NCO is killed off by…[Read more]

Mmmm: is that specific to that unit I wonder,

Although the latest FAQ messes things up:

Regarding Compagnia Sahariana. Squads are set at an NCO and 3
men. Up to 2 men may upgrade to SMG, Up to 2 men may upgrade
to LMG. Is the NCO meant to be able to upgrade to an SMG? Also, if 2 LMGs are taken one will be automatically without a loader (unless the NCO can load)?

The NCO can have one of…[Read more]

  • Bolt Action FAQ:

If a recce vehicle is charged by an enemy that starts the assault from within 6″, which rule takes precedence, the Surprise charge (so the vehicle cannot react with either a shooting or an escape move), or the escape reaction (so the vehicle cannot react by shooting, but can react by escaping)?

    The Surprise charge takes…[Read more]

Thank you, a very rapid response!

  • Bunch of 10 green troops manage to pass a test to assault an enemy tank.

Bunch of 10 veteran grenadiers manage to pass a test to assault an enemy tank.

According to the rules, apart from the fact the vets would be more likely to pass an order test,   both are equally effective at the actual attack on the tank?

    Hmmm…

  • Reasonably sure I am doing this right but …

A vehicle that has not been given no order this turn is assaulted by infantry who are under 6″ away. It cannot shoot in defence.  Does a vehicle with Recce have the same restriction? I think so.  The question arose as the recce vehicle was backed onto the table edge and had nowhere to run,

Bolt Action 2nd Ed page 73:

    Squad-Based Team Weapons
The most common team weapon carried by the typical infantry squad is the light machine gun. If a team weapon is included in an infantry squad then one of the other infantrymen in the squad becomes its second crewman, for example, a Bren gun team of firer and loader. Choose which model becomes…[Read more]

What do you all think? Could a squad’s NCO double up as a loader for a support weapon that is part of the squad?

(Question arose when making SNLF Grenadiers. Wanted a compact 3 mortar group which needs 6 men of course, but would. it need a 7th for the NCO or could he just be a loader.)

    Cheers

Warlord Games “toyed” with the idea of decks some time back, selling separate decks for Allied and Axis vehicles. Sales were probably bad and so the decks were discontinued. Now vehicle (and some artillery units like the German 88) cards are included in their packages, but as far as I know there are none for infantry units.

Again, it’s not that simple in my opinion.
The regulation says “… Simply move each model up to a maximum of 6 …” and in fact we can move models at different distances, passing a model in front behind or changing positions as we want, always respecting the maximum distance for each individual model.
During an ambush, one model may have traveled…[Read more]

I see what you mean, but why would it have to end its move in a line? Perhaps the men at the back have more movement left and so they all end up in a blob across the road.

The first model to be moved should be the one furthest upfront. Assume it was stopped by an Ambush attack after moving 4 inches, all other models have to be moved 4 inches to…[Read more]

Kar98K’s way is the way we play it at the Chelmsford bunker… reasons

    i) its quicker as you move all your models in one go before we work out shooting, rahter than half move, shooting, remove casualties, finish moving whilst remembering how far each individual guy can go

ii)unless exceptional damage is rolled the owning player removes…[Read more]

I think the rules really don’t cover this without a load of interpretation.

Odd I think, since this must be a common occurrence in people’s games?

  • Master Chief replied to the topic Ambush timing in the forum Bolt Action 3 years, 8 months ago

Yes, but lets say a more devious opponent can then string out his men in a line to avoid the HE template doing as much damage, whereas they started in a clump and intended to end in a clump.

Assuming that happens and the entire unit survives the HE attack, it will have to continue its remaining move in a line, because each model will now be…[Read more]

An advancing infantry unit can move up to its basic move rate. This is usually 6” in any direction. Simply move each model up to a maximum of 6”. Remember that a unit must maintain a formation, so once the whole unit has moved no model can be separated from the formation by more than 1”.

It is not so simple. How I put models together during ambush? Before starting to move they where maybe grouped close, at the end of movement they are grouped close, and during movement? I put them in a row and far away only because the ambush has already been declared and therefore I already know that enemy will fire an HE at them?

Group of infantry crosses the street. Artillery with HE  lying in wait.

Infantry I assume are moved one at a time.

At what point does the Artillery fire?  When it wants? And how about placing the HE template.
