Yes you have missed the ‘position the charging unit’ section on page 60. This should be in the declaration of charge orders section but isn’t. The frontal arc restriction applies when the order is given a the start of the turn. Note the use of ‘turn’ not ‘move’ in this section. Moves and turns are very different in Black Powder, which is…[Read more]

The rules say that you can only charge in hand combat in the frontal arc. However, is this arc fixed at the start of your move, or does it get “updated” with each individual move of a multiple move. For example, let’s say I have my unit pretty much in front of the enemy, some distance away. I get 3 moves. The first move, I angle off a li…[Read more]

Thanks for the correction Big Al.
Regarding Break tests see p.77, which lists the specific occasions when break tests are required. P.81 says you remove excess casualties after all NECESSARY break tests are done. Consequently putting the two together, winning units with excess casualties can remove them without a break test.
To Big Al’s point…[Read more]

Thank you Garry and Al, very helpful.
However, for (2) both sides taking heavy losses over their stamina in hand combat: I can’t see any reference on p71-72 that says the winner just throws away any excess casualty (shaken) markers. I thought any unit that takes excess hits needs a break test regardless of where or when?

1. Yes initiative moves are automatic but they must be done before you start issuing orders. (p.32)
2. Only the losers take a break test. The winners simply ignore the excess casualties and they are removed. (p.71-2).
3. This rule of not firing if you have moved more than once was introduced in the First Argument of Kings as being particularly…[Read more]

The hits required to destroy fortifications known so far:
(1) Barbed wire 6 hits (latest FAQ)
(2) Minefields 6 hits (Blowing it Up rules)
(3) Buildings 10 hits (2nd Edition rules)
(4) Bunkers 12 hits (2nd Edition rules)
I mat have missed it but what about other fortifications such as tank traps like Dragon’s teeth etc?

Yes good point, but some units like the US Beach Assault unit can choose not to pay 10 points to be equipped with bangalore torpedoes, in which case the unit “wastes” 1 turn to be Down to clear the barbed wire. If it had paid 10 points to get the bangalore torpedoes, it could Advance from within to more than 2 inches from the barbed wire and roll…[Read more]

Our test games of Black Powder are going well. Game seems to produce good results and is more dynamic than other rule sets.
However, play has raised a few questions, if I may…
(1) Initiative Orders. Pretty sure you don’t roll command tests. They are automatic. Correct?
(2) Hand Combat: Both sides received heavy casualties over their stamina…[Read more]

To me the difference between percentages are reasonable, considering that one is an explosive tube that any equipped / low trained soldier just have to put under the obstacle or on the minefield, the other requires the use of equipment such as pliers / scissors and mine detector for minefield, and engineers have specific training.
Another…[Read more]

Now bangalore torpodoes have a 72% chance (6 or more hits on 2D6) of clearing obstacles, compared to 50% (rolling 4+ with a +2 to get a six). That’s a flat 72% compared to the variable old manual clearing rule for minefields, which can go up to 84% (rolling 2+ for +1 veteran +1 engineers and +2 bangalore torpedoes).

I think they have confused ideas 😅, who writes the rules is not the same who thinks them, the left hand does not know what the right hand does, or there is no control and testing of rulebooks…
I think +2 only applies to mine clearing gear (mine detectors, etc.), which is not bangalore because it has its own specific rule (similar to explosives,…[Read more]

Thanks, finally we have it resolved 👍 This does make manual clearing with +2 using bangalore torpedoes a redundant.
Unless the bangalore torpedoes “special rule” only apply to Overlord engineer teams with bangalore torpedoes and not others, which is also weird.
— sigh — You are right the rules are messy.

These 2 points also came up on explosives:
(a) Single or multiple use: I assume explosives have multiple use, like anti-tank grenades.I agree, all squad equiped with explosive like AT grenades, so can use explosive many time.
(b) Attacking enemy units: I assume the engineer could “advance” 4 inches away from an enemy unit and detonate the explosi…

Easy army is correct. Found the source of the rule!
“D-day: Overlord” + FAQ pag. 24.
“All Bangalore torpedoes entries. Replace the last bracketed line with the following:
Roll 2D6. To destroy the obstacle the player must roll 6 or more hits.”Then bangalore is works similarly to explosive

These 2 points also came up on explosives (and bangalore torpedoes):
(a) Single or multiple use: I assume explosives have multiple use, like anti-tank grenades.
(b) Attacking enemy units: I assume the engineer could “advance” 4 inches away from an enemy unit and detonate the explosive. The enemy unit will be attacked by HE 4″.

Good point. My own view is that if the building is not destroyed (less than 6 hits from 3D6), any unit within are not affected, presumably the building cover protected them.
If 6 or more hits were achieved, the building is destroyed and all units within are killed accordingly based on the 2nd edition rules for destroyed buildings (page 125).

Thanks, I agree. The minefield rules across the books (Battleground, Duel and Western Desert) are consistent. The “confusion” arises on how these rules are to be applied to clearing barbed wire, specifically using bangalore torpedoes.
The “special rules” for bangalore torpedoes that appear in the stats for many engineer units in the Overlord book…[Read more]
