Well, August is here, time for another pledge.
This month, I’ll be painting a Warlord DAK Anti-tank gun and crew. I’m also going to try and paint a ruined building as well.
@Morbal – I’m not sure what went wrong with your image links. You should be able to copy/paste the HTML link into your post to share your pictures.July 31, 2018 at 2:29 pm #142295DeadmanwadeParticipantWell, I finished my 5 German Grenadiers.
@Morbal – I use IMGUR.COM.
Once you have an account set up, you can upload your pictures to their website.
Once they are uploaded, click on the thumbnail you want to share and it should open a small, pop-up window containing the image and some links. At the bottom of the window will be an option for the image size to display, I usually choose Large Thumbnail.
Next, you need to choose a link. For Warlord’s site, I think the HTML option is best. Click the copy button, come over to Warlord and paste the link.July 3, 2018 at 11:18 am #140327DeadmanwadeParticipantHere is an image of a large screen painted to represent the battle of Sekigahara.

If you zoom in, you’ll see that there are no particular colours or uniforms used by everyone. The Ii clan I mentioned can be found on the fifth screen from the right. Their clan symbol is a large yellow square on a red flag. Here is a similar screen from Nagashino.

The slightly longer answer is:
There weren’t really any efforts made to equip troops with uniform equipment or clothing. Weapons and armour were produced in large quantities, so would follow certain patterns, but the garments the troops wore wouldn’t. Each Daimyo would call upon his Samurai when he needed to raise a force. Depending on each Samurai’s land holdings, he would be required to raise a certain number of troops. So you would often have Samurai A with his squad of 10 Ashigaru forming a unit with the 15 Ashigaru from Samurai B and a further 6 from Samurai C. So you would have blocks of troops with a mix of all three Samurai’s equipment, plus whatever they provided for themselves. When a Daimyo did provide a full uniform it is still not 100% clear what they wore (not many records were kept). For example, the Ii clan and at least one branch of the Takeda clan famously formed forces decked out in red. However, it isn’t clear if this is only referring to the armour, or if every item of clothing were also red.
Contemporary artists didn’t really focus on the poor peasant Ashigaru and the Samurai could pretty much wear what they liked.
As a rough guide. Armour and spear shafts would normally be laquered in Black, Red or Dark Brown. Undergarments would be in drab greys, beiges and off-whites for the Ashigaru and brighter more vibrant colours for the Samurai. The lacework and cords on the armour would usually be very decorative and would stand out from the armour.
Of course, there would be a great range of quality and options depending on the clan and their wealth. The peasant levy troops of a small town Samurai would look considerably worse than the household troops belonging to the head of a large clan.
Troops would often have a simplified clan symbol on the front of their armour or on the front of their helmet (Ashigaru). Melee troops would often carry a small flag mounted on their back which also bore the clan symbol. Ranged troops wouldn’t as it threw their aim off and it was mainly used to identify friends in combat.
I hope that provides some answers for you.

Is there any further interest in this challenge? Anyone looking for some extra motivation to pick up a brush?
I’m taking a vacation back home for most of July, so my challenge is going to be short and simple this month. 5 German Grenadiers for NWE. I have other things on my bench, but they’re NSFW (Not Supplied From Warlord). 🙂
July 1, 2018 at 11:06 pm #140182DeadmanwadeParticipantFor my own preferences:
British, Indian and Commonwealth troops for the far east, both in Khaki Drill and Jungle Green uniforms.
Mountain Howitzers for said troops.
US infantry for the Pacific.
More Free French Colonial troops, so they can form a full platoon rather than just an additional squad in a French platoon.More early war plastic infantry for the big/popular armies and more metals for the minor powers.
Just more of everything really.

When you upload your images and then open them, there is a set of quick links on the right side of the page. One of them is for posting to websites (not forums) and that seems to work ok.

For this month, I plan to do 15 German Grenadiers for Bolt Action and 18 Zulus for Black Powder.
Anyone else willing to take up a brush?
May 31, 2018 at 10:00 am #136700DeadmanwadeParticipantThanks IO, I’ve missed being able to get an informed and speedy answer to my historical queries while the forums were down.
I’ve been looking at ways of doing troops for Kohima and Imphal, without buying a full metal army. I have a few ideas for the rolled shirt sleeves and a source for the headgear. Hopefully I’ll be able to move ahead with the project in the near future.
May 30, 2018 at 11:08 pm #136683DeadmanwadeParticipantA quick and simple question (hopefully) about late war British and Commonwealth uniforms.
Aside from the colour, were there any significant visual differences between the standard ETO Battledress and the Jungle Green uniforms? Would they be noticeable in 28mm?Ok, that was technically two questions, but hopefully one answer will lead to the other.
May 26, 2018 at 5:27 am #136085DeadmanwadeParticipantHonestly, it doesn’t matter too much, use whatever looks good for you. If you intend to play with a particular opponent or at a local club, find out what basing convention they use and do the same. Mounting all of your minis on individual bases and using a movement tray will give you the most flexibility. Multiple models on larger bases make it easier to move models around the table but you’ll need to figure out how to store and transport them because most carrying cases are for individual minis.
Game wise, the only thing you need to worry about is if your units are roughly the same width as your opponent’s. After that, it’s all about aesthetics.
May 25, 2018 at 4:30 pm #135978DeadmanwadeParticipantFanatics lets you ignore tests from losing half of your unit in one volley.
It makes no reference to flamethrowers and is not a blanket ‘ignore all morale tests’.The flamethrower rule says the target unit must always test morale.
So unless it gets addressed in an FAQ, you must test morale (FT rule) and Fanatics won’t make a difference.
