Dr Dave replied to the topic Epic ACW question about Cavalry and dismounted cavalry in the forum Black Powder 2 years, 9 months ago
Sorry to be the “wet blanket” here but the intention in “Glory Hallelujah!” was that a standard cavalry unit dismounts as a standard unit of skirmishers. It was that way for two reasons:
1) keep it simple
2) if units drop by one size when dismounted then it means that for a small unit 1/2 hold horses when it would become a tiny unit – obviously…[Read more]

Dr Dave replied to the topic ACW Glory, Hallelujah – charge rules in the forum Black Powder 2 years, 9 months ago
Hi there Tom – I’m glad that you like it.
1) As per the normal rules troops in buildings would not count as formed. I take this t be because in a cluster of buildings the attacker would be able to tell precisely which buildings were occupied and which ones were not. So we play that just like normal.
2) Yes – that was the intention. The modifiers…[Read more]

Dr Dave replied to the topic Can Charging Units Fire? in the forum Pike & Shotte 2 years, 10 months ago
Dave is assuming a miscalculation when it could simply be that whist the brigade commander ordered a charge, the unit command thought it wiser to advance and fire. I’d always allow them to fire. The idea of a unit doing nothing is just… well…. plain silly.

I’m pondering getting the Chasseurs a cheval of the Garde in 25/28mm
Does anyone make Mamelukes that might fit with Warlord figures?

Dr Dave replied to the topic Large unit stats in the forum Black Powder 3 years, 1 month ago
Why not count uber large units as two standard units in extreme cases. 1000+ might be in this realm of an average French bttn (at Waterloo) is 600.
…and while I’m here don’t forget that most cuirassier regts at Waterloo are small units!

Thanks Jim. Seems like a glaring omission though.

In the plastic sprue there’s a K-gun, but no Bren… have I missed it somewhere? How do players plan to make a commando troop without Brens?

Dr Dave replied to the topic Bolt action infantry base size in the forum Bolt Action 3 years, 3 months ago
Thanks All. Don’t tell anyone – but I’m not going to use BA. I just wanted to make sure that I wasn’t going to wreck 300 infantry for future BA use.

So the bases as supplied are 25 mm diameter dics.
I presume that there is nothing to stop me using 20 mm diameter discs?

Would I be right on assuming that the split stats page 83 ect. 12 pdr smoothbore , 3 ~2~1 means close range 3 dice to hit , medium 2 dice and1 dice long-range – yes, that is correct
Skirmishers …are these impervious to being targeted ? No – they the shooter suffers a penalty of -1 for the target being in skirmish order

How do they compare to the older plastic set? I think that they are better. All of the SMLEs have their bayonets fixed – which is much more authentic.
Do the figures in this new box set look more beefier or slimmer than the original set: they are beefier, slightly but look and feel better for it in 6 basic poses then you added the arms / weapons,…[Read more]

Dr Dave started the topic Churchill tanks in NWE – 4th Coldstream Guards in the forum Bolt Action 3 years, 7 months ago
For years I’ve always been charmed by the film of “BANDIT” and “BULLDOG” in the streets of Uelzen. It’s in the World at War TV series, episode Nemesis. There should be a third tank in the troop – “BUCCANEER” but I can’t identify her in the clips. They are 11 Troop of the 4th Battalion Coldstream Guards. My plan is to build my Churchills – suitably…[Read more]

Dr Dave replied to the topic Map size in Glory Hallelujah in the forum Black Powder 3 years, 7 months ago
There’s no precise scale Garry because of the simple fact that when Glory Hallelujah was conceived people often used different size units to what was recommended in Black Powder 1st Edition. My own preferred scale was 15mm for ACW and for Naps it’s 28mm – but I use 36 figure units, not 24. BP2 has done away with much of this with simply stating…[Read more]

Jim,
Sorry – but you said that “it was too late for that” – I took that to mean that you weren’t interested in pursuing it any more? I’m not employed by WG – only a couple of the supplement writers are – so it sometimes takes us a few days to catch up with the forum.
Regards,

Crops and trees often contain too much inherent moisture to burn. Crop fires are far rarer than house fires… I think.
Give it a long hot summer – dead or dry undergrowth then it all burns.

Hi there! I’m the chap wot wrote it… and yes, Garry has it spot on.
It’s really dependent on size of units and the brigade frontages. that was the problem from the start, with some folks having physically smaller units than others and now with the “epic” scale it’s even more fluid with potentially 100 figure regts. I hope that helps in some small way?
