OK thanks – yes I think I will continue to use the Advance Rules for Generals, seems much more engaging way to play.

As always thanks Big Al
Personally I think the rules for re-rolling could be a little clearer (especially for a relative newbie like me). However, your explanation makes perfect sense and I shall follow accordingly.
When you say “If you want to use the SR of the General, then it is he who must issue the order in the first place” I am assuming…[Read more]

Hello all
A few questions on re-rolls:
-When a general with a SR of 9 joins a brigade commander with a SR of 8, do you use 9 for the re-roll?
-If you are re-rolling using a general with a SR of 9 and you are ordering a unit with the Reliable rule, would that make the re-roll order a 10?
-If the general has joined a brigade commander for a…[Read more]

Thanks all for your comments – appreciated. Will have to give this a bit of thought!

Thanks Garry – I see your point. To make it even more complicated, I’ve just noticed that on page 160 of the main rules in the scenario section, Guards units (although generic not specifically British) are listed as 7/3/3+/3 with special rules of Elite 4+ and reliable.
I wish that, when the writers of the rules and supplements amend basic…[Read more]

Thanks Big Al – this is helpful. Yes, maybe you are right – just stick with the main rules. Therefore:
Foot Guards = 8/4/3+/4 plus Reliable and Elite 3+ (I like the way this compares to the French Old Guard stats as well – very even)
52nd/large battalion = 8/4/4+/4
Standard battalion = 6/3/4+/3
This seems about right.
Good point on the…[Read more]

Evening all
Question on unit classification for anyone who knows how the BP2 rules and AT2 supplement interact.
Should the British 1/52nd at Waterloo be considered a large unit (they had over 1,100 men)? If so (I would have thought yes), what stats should it have for H2H/Shooting/Morale/Stamina?
A standard light battalion is meant to be…[Read more]

Many thanks both. Sorry to labour the point but just to be completely clear. So a foot battery can limber, do one move, unlimber and shoot all in one Turn, provided has an order for three movies. Correct?
Agree with all your other points on horse artillery and shrapnel. Thanks!

A few more queries for anyone that can help:
-British rocket troop. What stamina is it? Is it the same as horse artillery?
-Foot artillery movement. I’ve seen a few threads on this but not sure of the final conclusion. Under the main BP2 rules (not supplements/house rules) can a foot artillery unit with a successful order for three Moves…[Read more]

Thanks Big Al – clear now and also clarifies my earlier question on forming squares. Good point on the -1 when not using initiative – easy to forget that one.

Thank Garry
This is really helpful as always. Having looked again, I agree with you.
Given both the Initiative Order and Proximity Rule are relevant if within 12” of enemy, it must follow that if you are allowed to change formation under Initiative Orders, you must also be able to under the Proximity Rule, or it wouldn’t make any sens…[Read more]

Hello all
Brief question on formation changes under the Proximity rule as I have seen differing comments on this.
My understanding is that is not allowed. You are only allowed to do a Move forward keeping entirely within your front quarter (or similar back into your rear quarter). This means that you can change direction e.g. pivot to face a d…[Read more]

East Norfolks replied to the topic French Napoleonic artillery in the forum Black Powder 3 years, 7 months ago
Thanks for that.
I think this means both are “standard” size but a British 9dr battery is classed as normal “foot” (with a range of 48″) and a French 8 gun 12 pdr battery can be classed as “heavy” (with a range of 60″, like siege). I guess this would make sense as it gives the French an advantage of 2 dice from 30″ rather than at 24″. Is this correct?

Hi all – I am new to Black Powder but really enjoying playing it with my 15mm Napoleonics. Quick question that is bugging me though – how is the firepower of a French 8 gun 12 pdr artillery company reflected versus the firepower of a British 6 gun 9 pdr company? Surely there must be a difference but I can’t find it – sorry for the dumb newbie…[Read more]
