Tout Casse…
It’s all a bit of a mess, isn’t it?
Hi Jedrek,
Warlord are not the only suppliers of wargame figures. People use Victrix, Footsore, Wargames Foundry,Gripping Beast and many others. Some come with round bases, some don’t, but bases can be obtained from a variety of sources, but I use Warbases. The cards only come with Warlord SPQR starter sets but are not necessary to play the game.
That is a shame, Renko.
Companies should be open to fair criticism. I do not have Cruel Seas so I cannot comment on that but I do agree that SPQR could have been better playtested and proofread.
Good luck with your dice…
You get up to 30 rerolls, but each dice can only be rerolled once. So, in the case you mention, your opponent rerolls all eight hits once and that’s it.
Though the shield actually only gives two parries….
Just had my first game using the new melee rules and the game does play a lot better now. I would like a little clarity on how it affects the phalanx but I assume that deciding when to break the phalanx to engage more enemies is left to the player.
Wow! That’s a pretty big rule change. Thanks for drawing attention to it.
I’ll see how that affects things.
Good idea to get a group to try to sort out SPQR but I am getting a bit disillusioned: I’m old enough to remember when rule sets were tested before they were published…
Once again, I agree, Cristoffer.
And don’t get me started on how many dice it takes resolve combat…With my hoplites I spend more time counting out dice than I do moving the figures.
I like the campaign idea and progression of heroes but I’m not convinced by the mechanics of the battles.
I’m with you on this one, Discoqing.
You can rationalise this all you like with historic references and unit differentiation but it doesn’t make sense in a game.
And, (heresy!) I suspect there might just be too much of this sort of thing in SPQR…
It will have wounds and armour for when your enemies try to hack it to bits with sharp things…
Thanks for that Bruno.
Here’s my take on it for my Greek campaign, done in Word.
It is set up for the next Spartan v Argive battle, hence the Cretan Archers.
As you will see, the Athenians are not doing very well!
I think that you are right on all counts.
I suspect a beardy approach to war band building will pay dividends as people get used to the rules…
I think that this is a part of the rules which needs making more clear. The FAQ reply is not very satisfactory.
I think that you can decide which weapon to use
You need a lot of dice…
And if you are doing Greeks I am not sure the balance is all it could be. Spartan hoplites tend to steamroller everything and starter heroes don’t make much difference.
