As an aside, a community member on FB /Discord is writing whats hoped to be an offical supplement for VaS – Here is his post from the Wardroom.

last year I began the process of proposing to Warlord that I write an official expansion to Victory at Sea. A few months ago I got the green light to go ahead and start working on the first…[Read more]

the missions all have a priority which gives you an extra 10% points, the agreed points or loses you 10% points…. for competative gaminng priority levels are normally ignored.
Erm… points…. yeah…. with the rulebook points I can take 3 different IJN Destroyers (DDs in short) all for the same 60 points and get 3 completely different type of…[Read more]

side note … do look in the ‘news from the wardroom’ as it was worked out that the starter set is NOT designed to have all the ships on the table at the same time. But rather give you the ships to do the 3 levels of priority as fleet can have (pg 21 in the starter booklet)

Next, I’d never take 2 bodyguards on a HQ unit. This is because you go above a 2 man unit and no longer gain the -1 to hit modifier which is one of the biggest defenses of a unit.
secondly I’d take a bodyguard with the FAO, because the extra wound is always useful. Out of preferance I’d give him a rifle because you want him hanging back as h…[Read more]

nit pick – which IS important for rules / list questions… thats a MEDIUM AT gun you have in your list, the 6 pdr QF gun, not a light AT gun.
The difference is a point of PEN (which matters for trying to damage tanks, especially at range) and 12″ of range

You could consider another National Characteristic instead of Rapid Fire as that needs lots of rifles and you are “rifle light”. Perhaps Vengeance?

Nat replied to the topic Hand-to-hand partial contact in the forum Black Powder 6 months, 2 weeks ago
So a few key points of BP v2 CORE rules (so not the epic versions which may be different)
1) Only a single unit (with a some exceptions for small unit / artillery) can fight on a facing
2) Units either fight or dont, the number of die they use is modified by formation, commanders, die split between multiple enemies etc not by ratio in contact. …[Read more] -

hmm…. so quick look at what they looked like
So I’d say at 28mm (even more likely 15mm) you could get away with looking at British / European Naval 1850s models
However I’m running into a similar roadblock (not helped by works firewalls!) on finding actual manufactures – will keep looking!

my (soviet) Air Observer is one of the BRS 28mm Ace pilots they did (Johnny Red)… so he can always double up as a ViP / downed pilot if the scenario requires one as I cant actually recall the last time I run him as an air observer….
mind you I think I’ve only run an artillery one once or twice in the last 18 months….

“I think I’ll model a FAO, but if I don’t like using it then it’ll just get used as a mortar spotter or something.”
Very wise. Will save you from having to fill out all those Friendly Fire Incident Forms.

The removal of casualties in this game is indeed confusing. When I started this game, my thinking was naturally that I was taking out the ones I could see first.
But you can fire at a group of 8 men, 2 of whom are behind a 20′ tall solid wall, get 2 kills and your opponent can remove the 2 that you have no LOS to at all.
Even with e…[Read more]

Nat replied to the topic Forward Air Observers for the US in the forum Bolt Action 6 months, 3 weeks ago
it has the potential for great comedy … epically if you have a lot of flack and shoot down your own aircraft! :p
Its one of those rules that can greatly vary between games from really bad (have 2 friendly airstrikes) to absolutely evil (2 airstrikes that neutralise the whole enemy force) and pretty much everything inbetween.
It also has the…[Read more]

No that fails because a spotter only provides Line of Sight EVERYTHING else which includes range is taken from firing unit

Under VEHICLES
“…distances are measured to and/or from the closest point of the hull of the model itself”
Under SHOOTING”
Measure the distance between each firing model and the closest visible enemy model in the target unit.”
Note that they seem to use Target and Target Unit interchangeably, even in the same…[Read more]

its clear… you measure to the closest part of the vehicle / building or model of a unit. If that is within minimum distance the shot fails
-
SteveT replied to the topic Indirect Fire Minimum Distance in the forum Bolt Action 6 months, 3 weeks ago
Well if you targeted a building that is 30cm long, of which just 1cm of that building is within your minimum range, are you going to say it fails?

erm… your auto correct needs looking at it boom CHITS … thats C not S!
However v2 as its a case of in the end phase count the number of engines you have left on the table in a squadron v the number of boom chits that the individual squadron has taken so far in the game.
eg if you have 4 single engine planes left but 3 boom chits then your…[Read more]
