We are just going to add 10% to english and use the national rules
I get it, and I am not a tournament player. So as long as everyone around the table agrees cool. What anyone does around their game table is strictly their business. Please let us know how this effects game play!
Rather than these nation rules, my next step will be to add ships as they were actually armed during this period. This is going to mess the point system up as well. So, I’ll probably go with something balanced around builds. Don’t know yet.

Now having said that, I agree with Invisible Officer, most scenarios are not going to be balanced in points. A good place to use crew skills to balance the game.
December 13, 2019 at 2:05 pm #172646LincolnlogParticipantFor balance purposes, I have not been using the National Rules. My 2nd game was USN vs RN, so both were drilled. Easier just to eliminate it all together, since they both would be adding the +1.
My last game on Saturday 7 December, I played French vs British. The French are bombarding a British beachhead in the Med. For this purpose they have 2 Bomb Ketch. There is a French Squadron of 2 x 1st Rates and 4 3rd Rates protecting the bombardment group. The British are entering the board from the SW corner, with a 5th Rate, 2 x 1st Rates, 4 x 3rd Rates. Victory conditions are the British must prevent the destruction of the beach head, and the French must destroy the beach head. Scenario was very balanced. Did not use the National rules. French started with 10 points more than the British, but since the objective was to destroy the Beach head, they had to make a decision whether to use the Mortar ships on the beach head or support the sea battle.

You are correct. The base points for merchantmen take both the poor turn radii and Inexperience crew into the point value.

November 11, 2019 at 4:48 pm #171523LincolnlogParticipantI agree. And I agree, but that’s because just coming out of irons puts you in forward quarter which is maximum light sails. I had so many complaints when I ran basic wind in my first game. Yep just stick to advanced.

So if a ship begins a turn in irons, the player makes a skill test roll. If the skill test is failed they must anchor (and this step includes rolling for damage if ship is at Battle sails or more). If the skill test is passed they then set level of sail for the turn, the ship is then turned where it is just barley out of irons. Then the turn proceeds normally.

November 11, 2019 at 3:06 pm #171516LincolnlogParticipantDon’t forget, the British and Dutch were at war in the early 1780’s. The Dutch and British were off and on like the French. The Dutch did have a blue water navy. From what I can see though not much use of the carronade in the 18th Century.

November 11, 2019 at 1:17 pm #171505LincolnlogParticipantWhile I understand the idea for having volunteer admin for the forum, and them having RL jobs, don’t they have a communication channel to the publisher. In the first week of the creation of Bolt Action forum there were sticky sub forums for reporting issues, and asking rules questions.
I had to ask them to create this forum a week after the game launched. Prior people were talking in General forum and it was difficult to find threads. Cruel Seas got rules questions and concerns answered, and added to banner on the Warlord home page.
Not faulting the volunteers, when it was mentioned on a You Tube video in the comments that they weren’t watching there forum, that comment was mysteriously deleted within a day.
Warlord is a good solid company, but may because this is a niche gaming, there doesn’t seem to be the usual great support. Perhaps this will change, they released a lot of products simultaneously, maybe they are just behind?

November 8, 2019 at 9:52 pm #171458LincolnlogParticipantSee, despite having read every Hornblower novel, and having built model sailing ships as a kid, these are topics that are totally out of my comfort zone.
Enjoying the conversation though, please continue.
I’ll be running a 4 vs 4 at Command Con tomorrow using the advanced rules.
