Good idea to use a template. I did a quick search and found this on the market. They come in different sizes, to fit different sized vehicles.

As I understand it the loss of the NCO does not mean the squad becomes inexperienced. For example a veteran squad losing its NCO would take morale checks at 9 instead of 10. It just decreases the morale by 1. It should not affect the squad’s shooting.

Good question, but seriously, how often (if ever) does this really happen? I have never seen this come up in our club’s games.
That’s probably true but it can still happen. One could also ask how often do you see a Chaffee take out a King Tiger from the front? I have only seen it happen once so far, and we nicknamed that tank “Lucky Chaffee” 😊

Good illustration diagrams. The other question that arises is what if exactly 50% of the firer lies in the front arc and 50% in the side arc. For example the line separating the target’s front and side arcs cuts exactly long the diagonal of the shooting vehicle.

Before the Battle for France book the war reporting team had these rules:
Simpler to use.

Atached is a screenshot of the rules for the unit, on page 96 of the Battle of France book.

I think while the firer’s line of sight might see 2 sides of the target, the firer’s gun barrel will only enter one arc of the target, unless the firer is so (un)lucky that the gun barrel lies exactly on the line that divides the front and side (or side and rear) arcs of the target. In which case I would use the “better” armour class … otherwise…[Read more]

Page 122 of the New Guinea book should be the correct.on:
A Dug-In unit counts as being Down when shot at, even if it has not been given a Down order (additional -2 to hit and the number of hits from HE is halved, rounding down). If the unit is issued a Down order whilst Dug-In, the benefits are doubled.

Ah I see you mean Down is -2 to hit. 🌝

I am trying to find where in 2nd Ed mentions “dug-in”, but found page 117 of the Battle of the Bulge book similar to the Western Desert campaign book:
DUG IN RULES
Where specified in a scenario brief, some units may begin the game dug in. These units have had time to dig foxholes or other defensive positions. Dug in units can also be hidden. If…[Read more]

A dug-in unit counts as Down when shot at, even if it’s not Down (additional -1 to be hit and the number of hits from HE is halved rounding down). If the unit does go Down while dug-in, the benefits of being Down are doubled (i.e. -2 to be hit and only one-quarter damage from HE).

The Bolt Action Errata has the correction below:
Page 124-125, HE weapons against buildings. The second and third paragraph will be changed to read as follows:
This means that when rolling to hit you ignore any to-hit penalties for cover. All other modifiers apply as normal – for example, Down in this case might represent the unit hiding

Master Chief replied to the topic Shooting From Cover Question in the forum Bolt Action 4 years, 7 months ago
I think it means your target gets the protection of cover if less than 50% of the models in your unit are at the edge of the cover. Best example to visualise this is a wall … if only 2 men out of a 10-man squad is touching the wall, then your target gets the bonus from the wall.
