Based on how few respond here, my suspicion is it might have fallen out of fashion. Bolt Action gets responses in moments sometimes.

I assumed this:
Orange for burning vehicles
Black for knocked out, destroyed
White for placing indirect fire markers, barrage markers, etc.

Good point about open order not being able to get support. And the formation change would slow them down.
But yes, as. I think you have surmised, under the rules as I understand them, a Roman legion would not only be uncaring of lighter troops in the woods, but would actively hunt them down!
I want a set of rules to be consistent, at least…[Read more]

SteveT replied to the topic Painting face camouflage in the forum Bolt Action 4 years, 1 month ago
I wouldn’t use a wash or that will seep into the recesses, whereas the camo should deliberately cover the ‘sticky out bits’. I would simply use straightforward painting, since this also mirrors the application process.

Hello! Thanks for your reply. You approached this the same way I did (at first) until I realise the HC rules differ from BP/P&S in one aspect: most units (not elephants and chariots) can enter open order to go into woods. As far as I can tell, this just makes them into giant skirmisher units, with no penalty not already applied to any other l…[Read more]

Seems odd that nobody can answer this!
To restate this: What advantages to lighter troops have over heavy troops in forests? I can see none. This is not realistic.

SteveT started the topic Excess casualties in the forum Hail Caesar 4 years, 1 month ago
If I understand it right, excess casualties are only removed after a break test.
So if you win a hand-to-hand fight you are not triggered to do a break test even if your casualties surpass your stamina? Is that right?
If right, they therefore keep any excessive casualties?
Very confusing.

Thinking about this more….since the heavy infantry would also be in open order in the woods, then other open order units would not be running rings around them :p

Very little description in the rules for these. Do they take the same order as their parent unit?

SteveT started the topic Moving to flank from the front in the forum Hail Caesar 4 years, 1 month ago
According to the prolixity rule, if a unit starts in the front of an enemy, they can only go to or away from the unit.
First of all, what does this mean? Can any diagonal movement be include, if so how much?
But if I unit got 3 moves in a turn, uses the first to get out of proximity range, can its other moves be used to get round the flank or…[Read more]

SteveT started the topic Sideways on—options? in the forum Hail Caesar 4 years, 1 month ago
In the image I have a red formed unit that has ended up facing sideways to the enemy blue unit.
What is it allowed to do in terms of movement?
And similar if the red was changed to open order (right side of same pic) what are its options?

But you think it’s ok for an unarmed mortar team reduced to 1 man to take an objective?

SteveT started the topic Going to open order to ignore skirmishers in the forum Hail Caesar 4 years, 1 month ago
Related to my other post about “who can use open order”.
Can a unit change from open to formed, just so it can ignore enemy skirmishers? Seems odd

SteveT started the topic Who can use Open Order in the forum Hail Caesar 4 years, 1 month ago
I’ve seen it as a side note in various unit type descriptions but its not clear to me what the overall rule is.
For example, can a unit of heavy infantry voluntarily enter open formation to traverse a forest? Can a war band?
Thanks

SteveT replied to the topic spotter and holding objectives in the forum Bolt Action 4 years, 1 month ago
I’m with Master Chief on this. The rules do not say anything about Spotters not being able to take stuff. The fact the rules do specifically single out medics as being unable to capture suggests they are the only notable exception.
ALSO:
From rules: “The spotter is part of the mortar or artillery team”
So if the mortar crew can capture…[Read more]
