  • Looking at page 23, why do small infantry units have the same frontage as standard units?

I was thinking that 2 small units can align to fight 1 standard unit, but this wouldn’t be the case according to p 23.

    Cheers

  • Hello all,

Want to give the game a try but the only ancients/medievals I have are 15mm based up for DBM (40mm frontages)

Our table is 6 x 4. So we need a reduction in scale to deal with the not-a-12′-long-table ,as well as smaller figure size.

We can’t use 28mm frontages as the number of figures needed would skyrocket.  I know the anything…[Read more]

  • I have been playing war-games over Skype/Facetime long before the ‘anti-social distancing’ of the plandemic. Works pretty well!

  • What happens when a Division Commander is lost? I assumed his group can only use initiate orders from now on…meaning those far from the enemy are reduced to just sitting and watching. Or can the General of the army ride in and at least give an order to one of the units, or can he indeed take on the roll of his lost divisional commander?

  • We had a situation of 1 Spanish and 1 British cavalry locked in hand combat.  The Spanish had another cavalry unit in Support, behind its friend in front, but slightly to the side.

    (1) Could the Spanish unit that is in support still do an Initiative Order to manoeuvre around and get ready for a charge to the British flank?  (I assume they c…[Read more]

  • I wonder if anyone has tried this scenario. I play as the Germans and it seemed impossible to even think about winning. Half the force starts off-board and the opponent has 150% size force and prep bombardment. Which side they arrive on seemed critical. One has a river ,the other is pretty much in the German’s faces straight away.

    Tricky…

  • Yes, but who gets which side? Dice for it?

  • Battle Bulge scenario.  Does anyone know which side the US is supposed to come in on?

  • Vehicles

I only paint separate pieces if they are going to end up enclosed  such  as inside a truck cabin; the sort of places that you can’t jab a brush in later.

Otherwise if you paint separate bits you are making extra work for yourself and so many surfaces end up not being visible anyway, something hard to judge until you make it.

  • The thing I found curious was Big Al saying  “a unit that is shaken cannot advance on the enemy”.  I’ve looked for that under shooting and hand combat. Can’t find it. It’s a game changer. I can find “shaken can’t charge” is all.

  • I’m having trouble seeing where Mixed Formation is of advantage.

So they count as skirmishers from the front (except artillery can ignore the skirmishers anyway, as can anyone else with a better target)

They shoot with only a single dice, albeit with a wider field of view.

So when do you use them?

The only case I could think of might be on an…[Read more]

Yes, George, they have to roll again next turn. Fog of War.

  • Excellent. Thanks!

  • The rules say that you can only charge in hand combat in the frontal arc.  However, is this arc fixed at the start of your move, or does it  get “updated” with each individual move of a multiple move. For example, let’s say I have my unit pretty much in front of the enemy, some distance away.  I get 3 moves. The first move, I angle off a li…[Read more]

Thank you Garry and Al, very helpful.

However,  for (2) both sides taking heavy losses over their stamina in hand combat:  I can’t see any reference on p71-72 that says the winner just throws away any excess casualty (shaken) markers. I thought any unit that takes excess hits needs a break test regardless of where or when?

  • Our test games of Black Powder are going well.  Game seems to produce good results and is more dynamic than other rule sets.

However, play has raised a few questions, if I may…

    (1) Initiative Orders. Pretty sure you don’t roll command tests. They are automatic. Correct?

    (2) Hand Combat: Both sides received heavy casualties over their stamina…[Read more]

Thanks Invisible Officer, useful historical info.  And Big Al, thanks again. I had wrongly assumed the rules on page 88 were for big squares made from multiple units as shown on the photo  on 89. But they would be Brigade Squares (p.91), not Battalion Squares (p.88) ! Damn it. Mystery solved.

Having trouble pinning rules about Squares. I am using BP v2 rules , not any extra stuff.

    (1) Can a square move whilst remaining as a square? (I assumed not)

    (2) On the reference sheet from the warlord site, it says they get 1 free move if command failed and notes “one move max”. Why does it specify “1 move max”, I thought free moves were always…[Read more]

  • This is something I have already noticed as a newbie player.

“3 move orders” are going to occur more than “2 move orders”.  This is simply based on the fact that 2 occurs only when you roll exactly 2 less than needed whereas 3 occurs on 3 under, 4 under, 5 under, 6 under…

This strikes me as very strange. Anyone else noticed this? I wonder if…[Read more]
