SteveT started the topic Who can use Open Order in the forum Hail Caesar 4 years, 2 months ago
I’ve seen it as a side note in various unit type descriptions but its not clear to me what the overall rule is.
For example, can a unit of heavy infantry voluntarily enter open formation to traverse a forest? Can a war band?
Thanks

I’m with Master Chief on this. The rules do not say anything about Spotters not being able to take stuff. The fact the rules do specifically single out medics as being unable to capture suggests they are the only notable exception.
ALSO:
From rules: “The spotter is part of the mortar or artillery team”
So if the mortar crew can capture…[Read more]

This situation threw up lots of confusion: 2 Gallic war bands vs 4 small Camillan Roman infantry.
(Q1) We assumed it is rolled as 2 fights. Is anything in support at the start of the round? (see pic) We assumed not as all units are engaged at the front.
So after round 1. One Gaul unit won the fight. Its two Roman opposing units had to roll…[Read more]

On the massive damage question: They both have +4 armour penetration so it seems reasonable to me. Assuming actual damage was scored by busting through the boat’s armour, then the boat can trigger its special.
The heavy howitzer would still apply lots of pins though, on a hit, as it’s not a damage roll. So in that sense the heavy howitzer is…[Read more]

Thank you very much. I was in fact just facing this decision when I read your message.
I think the way forward for us, due to the lack of a gargantuan table, is to reduce all distances by 30%. Including unit frontages then.
12 men does seem about right then. (6 wide x 2 deep) (actually 3 bases of 2 x 2 men)
Then I thought what about pikes. …[Read more]

SteveT started the topic Terrain Effects in the forum Hail Caesar 4 years, 2 months ago
I am surprised by the Black Powder/Hail/Pike series in that terrain seems only to affect movement and shooting.
Not seen anywhere that it affects, say, a heavy formed unit, being more easily taken down by lights in rough terrain?Perhaps I am missing something

SteveT started the topic Does this unit fight twice? in the forum Hail Caesar 4 years, 2 months ago
On my image, I have a pair of units attacking an enemy pair. One enemy has to give ground. The winner doesn’t follow them.
So now we have 1 unit with friend (the winner of the first fight) on its flank vs 1 enemy. Does the friend get to support this new fight?
Sorry for bombard of questions, hoping these help others too.

SteveT started the topic Skirmishers – what can they do? in the forum Hail Caesar 4 years, 2 months ago
Unit of skirmishes, red on my image, looking at friend infantry in combat with enemy infantry (see pic).
What can they do? Not allowed to charge at formed or shoot into combat..

SteveT started the topic Large units – worth it? in the forum Hail Caesar 4 years, 2 months ago
I can see their large fighting values are excellent 1 on 1. But don’t you open yourself up to being attacked by 2 regular sized units on the front flank? From what I have seen, 2 regulars ‘outgun’ a large.
Any input welcome!

Unit counts occur when building army lists and determining break points.
But what do you do about Small/Tiny/Large units? 2 smalls make 1 regular?
Cheers

I see. Thank you.
Would be doing ECWs.

SteveT replied to the topic Small unit frontages in the forum Pike & Shotte 4 years, 2 months ago
So you are playing Small = frontage of half a large.
I was think Small should be half a regular. Otherwise if two smalls contact a regular on the same flank, wouldn’t they end up looking a bit odd? Or does it not matter?
Taking it to silly extremes, if you had a great big line of regular size units and a long line of small units, then these…[Read more]

SteveT replied to the topic Three flankers… in the forum Hail Caesar 4 years, 2 months ago
Yes Al, thanks , some very useful pointers there.
I should have added a diagram to better illustrate the situation.
[Persian Cav] [Macedonians]
[Persian Infantry] [Persian Infantry] [Persian Infantry]
So the Macedonians and Persian Infantry are all already engaged. 2 Persian Inf are in support
Next turn the Pers…[Read more]

Had this situation earlier.
One Macedonian unit, facing off against a line of 3 Persian units. (So 1 supporting left and 1 supporting right)
A Persian Light Horse was somewhere to the left flank of the Macedonians, not engaged.
The rules say only 1 support per flank allowed.
I believe as the Persians were not starting the turn fully BEHIND…[Read more]

Not only don’t agree but are opposite in meaning…
From p.72 rules:
- On the roll of a 6 ‘to hit’ by ranged attacks requiring less than 6 to hit.
From Quick Ref sheet
• On the roll of a 6 ‘to hit’ by ranged attacks requiring better than 6 to hit.
Which is it?

Thanks Al.
I cannot see any rational for a stone wall (Moral save) to be in a different category (Shooting mod) for a metal wall (aka armour). z
