I know you are coming at this having just 1 box, so it poses a unique challenge
(On the 2 platoon thing being cheating or not: As it’s all point based, it’s all good. Unless you are in some tournament or scenario that specially says 1 platoon max per player. I know when we started it was a way for us to use our then limited pool of figures.)

1st Lt vs 2nd Lt. In my experience, those higher ranked leaders are hard to justify within smaller armies. I think they are better used by experienced players who can better see where a critical rush is called for. If I were you, I’d stick to 2nd Lt at the moment. And the 2nd LT does not give you any extra command radius either.
The other th…[Read more]

Ah, yes it does say you US can use up to 3 in a little additonal note. That will be interesting come Version 3 where they might tweak MGs, so hold on to your steel hat…
I would try to squeeze in a bazooka if possible, especially if there are in the box, and if only for the extra order die too. Certainly way higher priority than the medic. T…[Read more]

Oe thing: are you sure that platoon has 0-3 MGs allowed? (not that it matters as you going for 1 anyway). My US Army Book and the Warlord Army Builder App both show 0-1 ?
I guess you are limited to the Perry box, for now, but flamethrowers /bazookas might be a good additional purchase, then at least you get anti-tank capability. At the moment,…[Read more]

I think the added BARs is way better than the Medic. Good move.
I don’t play the US but often against them as those BARs hurt.

Random thoughts:
Personally, I would avoid the Leader + 1 assistant, as the moment you take 1 loss it triggers the “now make a morale check for taking 50% losses”. I would go 2 assistants.
Is an upgrade to Veteran for your sniper available? I say that as it often comes down to sniper duels.
MMGs are not that great in BA in some ways (you will…[Read more]

Yeah , what Nat said. Any of these points issues may become moot soon-ish.
For now, get the Army Builder app as the seem to update it with the latest points costs and options.
On the question of “why vehicle X” is not included: as WW2 had hundreds of different ones, I suppose they had to draw the line somewhere!
Also I think the designers…[Read more]

Being “completely unhistorical” is not fair I think, since you are looking at a snapshot of live war, not a pristine parade ground. In other words, you are getting a zoomed-in view of a tiny area of battle, with units chaotically interacting in the field already haven taken various losses and gained temporary attachments of all kinds. You c…[Read more]

SteveT replied to the topic Heavy weapons at long range and pinning in the forum Bolt Action 7 months, 3 weeks ago
The weapons chart at the back of the rule book lists HMG under Heavy Weapons, and not Small Arms.
As far as I understand, a HMG at its long range is a penetration 0 weapon vs the front of armoured targets and would not qualify for pins.

SteveT replied to the topic Fixing MMG Teams in the Game in the forum Bolt Action 9 months, 2 weeks ago
You can balance them without any rules changes at all:
Reduce their cost by 10 points.
No reduction for those mounted on vehicles (who really shouldn’t be so effective firing through slits or on the move

SteveT replied to the topic team model weapons in the forum Bolt Action 11 months, 2 weeks ago
Yes, it is a very open to interpretation when they do not provided a list of option. Taking it to silly extremes, you could model a Russian sniper team with captured Panzerfausts or Assault Rifles, which might win you games but no friend :p

SteveT replied to the topic Tank "size"? Described or Damage Value? in the forum Bolt Action 1 year, 2 months ago
The name of its entry in the Japanese forces book is something of a giveaway.
“TYPE 97 CHI-HA MEDIUM TANK”. :p
It mostly seems to be a criterion of which slot it gets put in armour lists, and/or how it was used, and yes, the bizarrely named “damage value”.
Tank size occasionally crops up in some rules: like a tank ramming a building, or (fr…[Read more]

SteveT replied to the topic Starting Hungarians- which book? in the forum Bolt Action 1 year, 3 months ago
Each campaign book is a bit different. The early ones throw scenarios at you to pick and choose. Some campaign books present more balanced fights, while others tend to be a bit more historical you get what you get and good luck!.
Some later ones go for more a linked series feel, giving a very nice feel of events of the time. The very best on…[Read more]

Looks like some more Hungarian units incoming in the next Campaign book (Case Blue). Good, good.

SteveT replied to the topic Starting Hungarians- which book? in the forum Bolt Action 1 year, 3 months ago
I wouldn’t worry about that. It is just stuff like late war tanks or specialised troops should not be in early war lists. It wouldn’t make any sense to have the end war high tech stuff steamrolling over 1941 opponents. You can always avoid even these few restrictions if you go down the generic reinforced platoon rule that can include pretty m…[Read more]

The new units in the Budapest book can be used in the Theatre Selectors in the Italy and Axis book, but some can only be used in later war ones.
It’s a good book, gives you some nice options.
3 new theatre selectors too:
Carpathian Mountains Border Guards Reinforced Platoon
Assault Artillery Battery Armoured Platoon
Hungarian Armoured Field…[Read more] -

Thanks Stuart. Replacing them with unarmed seems a bit silly. No pistols for you!
