I use Vallejo and AK 3rd Gen with a brush and Vallejo Air and Tamiya with my airbrush.

I find all the various makes of paint alright to use. i use a paint brush, everybody has their own idea as to what the exact colour of British Olive Drab should be. I would go for Humbrol 155, but then I tend to give the vehicle a dark wash, highlight, dry brushing of dust and mud, so at the end of the day it could be any base colour. Thank goodness you didn’t ask about the correct shade of Dunkel Gelb! I once saw three modern British army APCs on a transporter and they were each a different shade of green! So I guess don’t worry about colour correctness unless your using Dunkel Gelb.

There is no such thing as just one correct colour outside of the factory!

All colours (be it paint or dye) fade with washing, wear and tear, sunlight etc.

Two identical bits of kit (be it armour, canvas or uniforms) treated exactly the same will alter colour at different rates.

picture of Soviet BDRMs… look at the shades of green!…. and yes Green paint and dye can go brown….

Have you looked at the official Bolt Action painting guides (PDF files)? They are a good start for beginners. They used to be free (and easy to find), but I have not seen them listed lately. Anyway, I’m sure they are floating about someplace if you know where to look.

As for paints, I also like Vallejo, but AK, Tamiya, and MIG also make good paints as well. Also, do you like using a air-brush? If you do not have an airbrush, Tamiya spray can (rattle can) paints are actually pretty good, and provide a good base coat. Depends on which country you are painting, but some recommended colors are: TS3 Dark Yellow (German), TS4 German Gray (German), TS28 Olive Drab 2 (American/British).
