I’m not sure how we ended up playing like this but we think it is wrong. Do multi-shot small arms weapons ( assault rifle, submachine gun , etc. ) get 2 shots in close combat assaults than reroll hits or do they just get one shot and reroll if it hits. Thanks for all response this forum gives.

The attackers make one assault attack per man (keep in mind that some weapons and special rules confer additional attacks). As there is no taking cover from a grenade blast, bayonet thrust or point-blank shot, all close quarter attacks against other infantry or artillery crews hit automatically. Roll to inflict damage in the same way as for shooting, including inflicting exceptional damage on rolls of 6 followed by a 6 as explained on page 58. Note that no Pen modifiers apply in close quarters, regardless of what weapons the combatants are equipped with, and no weapon special rules apply except for the assault special rule. Also note that pin markers have no effect in close quarters and are ignored for the duration of the fight.
I believe multi-shot weapons still make 1 attack unless it is an assault weapon which allows it to make another attack (up to max of 2 attacks) should it score damage. So for example the US BAR gunner will make 1 attack although the BAR has 2 shots and is not an assault weapon.

N.1 damage roll per model.
Tough fighters or weapons with a special “assault” rule that succeeded on the damage roll, reroll a second time.September 7, 2020 at 10:18 am #181373Stuart HarrisonParticipantAgree with the above with the exception of weapons/units with special rules that explicitly state they get additional attacks in close quarters – ie: adding a lance to a Polish cavalryman specifically gives him +1 attack. This is covered in the FAQ:
“Some units from first edition books, like Sgt Kenshiro, or Polish
lancers, have additional attacks. And most of these are tough fighters
too. How does this work in the second edition?
If a rule states that a unit has additional attacks in melee, that rule
applies as normal, literally (so lancers get two attacks rather than
one). Then, if the unit are also Tough Fighters, they get to re-roll
all hits as normal.”(note even the FAQ writers get mixed up occasionally – tough fighters get to roll another attack if they cause damage, they don’t ‘get to re-roll hits’)
