I have rigged my ships with standing in black and running with buff coloured. This with the sails gives additional stability to the masts and with the addition of a textured base that extends to the edge of the spars it protects them on the table top allowing turning and collisions etc to be measured. See some pictures.

The masts are set at an angle to a quartering wind as opposed to square which adds to the animation but the crows nests are off set and the rattling sound need to be cut to fit!
