Some historical battlefields have terrain features that immediately define them. Things such as the windmills at Lutzen, or the farm of La Haye Sainte at Waterloo. These features aren’t always commercially available and so for my next battle I’ve had to scratch build something. I started with part of Warlord’s plastic castle as a starting point.
Any guesses? 🙂

July 22, 2018 at 8:16 pm #141693Charge The GunsParticipantI can see why you guessed that Corso. But it is much smaller.
More clues.

The answer is Boath Dovecot (or Doocot in Scots) from the Auldearn 1645 battlefield.
The model is based heavily on the dovecot that stands today on Castle Mound, the remains of a medieval motte and bailey castle.
It is possible that this building post-dates the battle, but it is such an iconic landmark that I couldn’t really refight Auldearn without including it.
Castle Mound itself was a key part of the battlefield, forming the right of MacColla’s defensive position in the village and as such was probably held by Gordon of Monymore’s regiment.

July 28, 2018 at 3:12 pm #142194Rough RiderParticipantThat turned out great (I would never have guessed dovecot btw).

Ebay will turn up just about anything, including pigeons! (Thanks to railway modellers mainly, I think.)

Near enough to Culloden to feed my 1746 Hannover / Jacobite forces. 😉
August 1, 2018 at 5:00 pm #142396Charge The GunsParticipantThanks IO!
Yes, the two battle sites are very close. Hurry’s Forces probably crossed Culloden Moor on their march to Auldearn.
Would be interesting to know if the doves from Auldearn did end up feeding either of the armies :-).
