Do support units need to be given an order to give support or is it simply based upon whether they are within 3 inches and positioned in such a way to give support?

No order necessary – units provide support by being within 3″.
Orders are only necessary for units to move. This is the general’s/your job. Everything else (fighting, shooting, etc.) is left to the unit’s officers so happens ‘automatically’ in game terms.

Good question. We pondered this for a while when we started with the BP series. A unit can shoot at visible targets, and also support a friendly unit, in the same turn.
