First developed by Nazi Germany in the late 1930’s, the Ausf H variant (introduced in 1943) of this effective and prolific medium tank saw improvements in its armour (with the aforementioned zimmerit paste and easily damaged side skirts) and the replacement of rubber coated return rollers with cast steel. These modifications increased the weight of the tank and reduced its mobility.
Armed with the devastating 7.5 cm (2.95 in) KwK 40 L/48 main gun and the 7.92-mm Maschinengewehr 34 (MG34), this platform was a good match against nearly any medium tank the Allies could bring to bear (such as the Soviet T-34). Over 3,000 Panzer IV Ausf H were built making it one of the more frequently encountered vehicles in the European theatre post 1943.
