The core of Montrose’s Highlanders, the brave and dashing Clansmen, fighting for their Laird and their clan’s honour, and lets face it, its not as if the Scots need an excuse for a punch up is it?
The Laird and his close family generally formed the front ranks of a highlander charge, making up a rank of experienced clansman warriors. They’d fire off a volley, toss aside the now useless firelocks and then charge in a wild and loud manner. The middle ranks prepared their Lochaber axes, bows, muskets and broadswords and made for a few more ranks of fearsome opponents. Closing out the rest of the charging horde of screaming plaid were the so called “Arrant Scum”. These were the old, young, and poorest of the lot. Armed with whatever heavy bit they could get hold of – or perhaps a cherished Caliver, long past its usefulness as a ranged weapon – these men lent their weight to the charge. Each one of these miniatures simply overflows with character, how can you resist the call of the Highland Arrant Scum support pack?!
Not all of the Highlanders that fought in the Civil War ran amok in wild bunches! Oh no, the Covenanter forces fielded units from the Highlands who had no love for Montrose nor the King.
