The latest vehicle in our Bolt Action range is a heavily sandbagged US Sherman 76mm, In an effort to deal with anti-tank guns and portable anti-tanks weapons such as the panzerfaust, tank crews went to great lengths protect their vehicles – often sandbags, tree trunks and other apparel was used as a form of ablative armour. Our new Sherman is just such a vehicle – grab yours from the Warlord webstore here.
Despite a request from Patton to stop using ramshackle up-armor substitutions, it was rare to see a Sherman in ’45 without any field improvisations. Even warnings that the additional weight of sandbag after sandbag would cause a strain on the chassis, crews still strapped on whatever they saw fit. Such was the fear that panzerfausts and panzerschrecks carried!
Tests as to the effectiveness of improvised armor vs infantry anti-tank weaponry gave a mixed bag of results. Sand certainly wasn’t going to help stop an 88 shell, but maybe, just maybe it would give you a second chance against a panzerfaust in the hands of a German infantryman hunkered down in some bocage.
